I made it all the way up to a nickel before I decided she was indeed right.

OK, here’s a “what if…” for you to consider. Read the story at the link to determine for yourself.

World War One: The British hero who did not shoot Hitler

Henry Tandey became the most decorated private soldier in World War One. His bravery though, would be eclipsed in the run up to World War Two by allegations he had spared Adolf Hitler's life, in 1918. But, is the story accurate?

If we got out our decoder rings, could it be that the question in the OP was something like, "If Germany had invaded Britain instead of the USSR, and Hitler were a different sort of leader, could Germany have won a WWII that did not involve the US or Russia?"

With that assumption, here are some thoughts.

There wasn't much defense left in the UK after Dunkirk, but Germany's navy was not ready to do this on its own. Airpower was coming into its own, with respect to warships, and if Germany could have had air supremacy over the English Channel that might have been enough to make the difference. While Germany in 1940 really did not have enough fighter strength to win the skies over the English Channel, it came dangerously close.
Arguably a Hitler move (diverting the Luftwaffe from going after the RAF to doing terror-bombing runs in revenge for a British raid on Germany) screwed that pooch and, instead of continuing to take out critical air defense installations and forcing British fighters up to defend them (i.e. preparing to support an invasion) , the Luftwaffe was stuck bombing and defending bombers, losing planes and skilled pilots for zero strategic benefit.

That said, IMO even without Hitler diverting their air effort, they would not have succeeded in 1940. Potentially, if they'd consolidated their already-won territories, focused their economy (critical and scarce steel/iron/minerals) on fighters, anti-shipping aircraft, and warships then in a couple-five years they might have been able to build up enough strength to take on the UK on their home ground.

However, there are historians who think that Stalin had his eye on more Eastern European territory than he had already taken, and that he might have jumped Hitler eventually. So maybe waiting those years building up to go after the UK and focusing on naval/air power might not have worked for Germany, either, and maybe a Nazi-Soviet war was only a matter of time.
