Yeah, it's not a common headline. That's the very same tank where I topped off my club's Cessna 152 Thursday morning!

Driver dies after police chase, crashing car into aviation fuel container

Jun 30, 2018 Updated 9 min ago

One person is dead after crashing his vehicle into an aviation fuel container at Davenport Municipal Airport, causing the car to catch fire, the Iowa State Patrol said in a news release.

The incident occurred at 7:20 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jose Varela said the driver of a 2004 Ford Taurus was driving recklessly when Iowa State Patrol troopers tried to pull the vehicle over.

The Taurus fled from police, eventually crashing through the gates of the airport.

Varela said the driver then accelerated and rammed into an aviation fuel container which caused a large fire.

While the man's car caught fire, the aviation fuel did not.

Varela did not say if the driver initially died as a result of the crash and resulting fire.

The name of the driver has not been released.

Varela said that multiple agencies assisted, but did not say where the pursuit was initiated or which agencies were assisting.

A few more details here, like:

"The car caught fire and troopers say the man got out. According to ISP, the man tried to run from police but eventually got back inside the burning car and later died."

Maybe he was the brother of the dude from the 'Burning Man' festival that ran into the fire?! Family tradition and all that.

I presume their insurance would pick that tab up. Not fair as it was caused by some jackass, a dead jackass, but I personally think his "estate" should be on the financial hook for what he caused prior to his death.

I'm not good at math, can't convert to dog money.

The city owns the airport, no idea about insurance:

Orlando area has quite a variation. Low prices for 100LL are just over four bucks, high prices are just under seven.

Fuel at Our Little Airport is on the low priced side, the city leases the fuel facility from our Owners Association and sells the fuel at low cost. But don't expect any service. It's strictly self-service. There are no city employees at the airport except to show up to do things like accept a fuel delivery, maybe replace the paper in the receipt printer at the self-service pump. There is a phone number posted for a contact at the city but that phone is rarely answered and voicemail does not reliably get a call back. The Jet-A pump has been broken and out of service for many months. If you are a transient and land here hoping to find low price fuel it's a "maybe" proposition -- you better have enough fuel on board to get to another airport.
