Spent the weekend in McCarthy at the Kennecott Mill. One of my favorite places in Alaska. It takes effort to get there but it's worth it. One of those places where the journey is as much an event as the destination. Highly suggest to anyone who makes the trip there to take the mill tour with St. Elias Mountain Guides. You get to hike up to the top of the mill and descend all 14 stories inside of it learning the history and the mechanics of what makes it work.

My favorite shot from the weekend.

Which knuckleheads and which show? There's been more than one.

Love that place. Great memories! When I went there 30 years ago you had to pull yourself across the river by hand in a little cage. Is that still the method?

I hiked in to Symphony Lake in July, parking lot near Eagle River I thought. It was about 5 miles in, mostly flat. I could see a fair amount of fish in shallow water near the shore. I think with a small spinner or fly one would get some action.

My taste of AK for the Summer. I also made it to Chena Hot Springs NE of Fairbanks. Not worth the long drive just for that, if in the area, kinda cool.

No there's a pedestrian footbridge now. They still limit vehicular access. Park at the campground beside the river, walk across and can catch a shuttle van up to the mill site. There's a separate bridge for vehicular traffic that is limited to locals only.

I remember one called edge of Alaska. Some guy called Neil was putting a bunch of money into a project to have mine tours and the locals were all up in arms thinking it would bring in too many outsiders.

Yes, that one was especially kringey. A lot of Hollywood made up drama being passed off as reality tv.

Was there in 2020 and really enjoyed the bumpy ride out there.
Everything was closed then so no guide but will go back some day as it was an amazing place.
Saw my first moose droppings there! HA HA!
