I noticed this tree on my land a while ago and had no idea what it was. I was hoping it was shagbark hickory, but turns out the bark isn't right. Anyhow my friend has one on his property and said it looks like black cherry.

I'm really hopeful it is cherry. It will be coming down be my my smoking wood. Not great pictures. It's very tall. But hopefully you can see the bark and leaves enough.

I have a lot of cherry here on the property, I'm saying 99% yes it is cherry.

Just my .02 cents, but I would rather keep it for my birds. Also good for snacking on occasionally and I have had wild cherry wine that was a treat.

I never thought about that.... what kind of BBQ do you have that burns wood? I've always burned charcoal in my grill but for heating my house with my stove I typically burn a mix of around 33% oak, 33% cherry, with the rest being maple, birch, beech, and hickory.

Birds and deer here love the wild cherries, I never thought of trying to gather enough wild cherries to make wine though. Hmmm......

Just let the birds eat them and then deposit the remains on your car.

This thing is about 60 feet tall. So maybe birds are getting fruit but that's about it. It wouldn't likely have enough to make wine. I don't see others, but I've just learned what immature cherries look like so I'll be searching for them.

I have a nice stick burner (as the bbq forums like to call them).

I would think that any grill that uses charcoal, would probably do just fine burning wood. I’m no BBQ expert, but any grill I had in the past, I could choose between wood or charcoal.

Now I’m old and lazy. I just use a Traeger.

If that's cherry, before you burn it, you might want to check to see what it would bring sold as lumber. Might bring a pretty penny.

Did a quick google and found this essay. http://www.crawfordconservatio...atsThatTreeWorth.pdf

Just food for thought.

Just be aware that stickburners do have a learning curve for temp control. You can probably intermingle the wood with your charcoal in your current grill if you want to add smoke.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

What's on the ground under it? If it were cherry you'd see pits wouldn't you? They fell in the summer but would still be there.

The leaves look like hickory to me. I have a
large, old shagbark hickory that hangs over my property line from neighbor's yard and it's finally almost done dropping nuts which are the size of small limes when the husk is intact:

It may not be a shagbark hickory but there are several varieties of hickory trees.

That is a Cherry. The fruit is only about the size of a pea so you won't see any pits on the ground.

I just searched. Definitely not hickory, no nuts. So it's cherry. It's tall. If it will come down cleanly without getting stuck on other trees it will be my smoking wood. It's worth more to me for BBQ than it is to a lumber yard.
