Yes, I have Googled and Mapquested it, but just asking forum , members is this my only option.

Planning on going to Mathews , Va this summer, will be coming in from Rte 360, taking 288 east , looks like I get on I95 South for a short distance, off on Rte 10 short distance, then get on I85 north to the I64 East Interchange, then east to Rte 33.

Only other option is for me to go to South Hill, get on I85 north to the I64 Interchange.

I really don't want to drive through Richmond city if possible.I have driven the 360/288 West to Bowling Green , Va many times, but haven't driven the 288 East leg.

Just some input would be appreciated, think Mapquest shows a 4-1/2 drice from my residence.

Why not just take 288 to 64?

Do you mean 95 north to 295, to 360?

288 leg from 360 avoids RVA. Take 95N from 288. Proceed on it to 64S, take 64S to Exit 250 and on to 105 (Fort Eustis Blvd)to 17N to Va-14. Be mindful of your speed while transiting along 288 & 64S. Troopers & counties patrol them vigorously.

Just looking at maps, it seems Rte 10 gets in the picture as a shortcut to I64.

I am wanting to visit the Chesapeake Bay, as I have never been there before, and rather visit the Mathews/Gwynns Island area instead of going through Norfolk to the Eastern Shore.
Mapquest also shows a route for me (Near Danville), going to South Hill,Va, up I85 , then exiting to I64. I keep calling I64 East, but is t designated South?

I used to drive through RVA sometimes twice a month going to Bowling Green,Va doing Siberian Husky rescue transports, but have been out of the rescue for three years now, so wondering whats changed .

I live in Richmond and travel this way all the time. I keep a sailboat out that way in Fishing Bay on the Piankatank adjacent to Gwynn's Island.

The fastest route from 360 E is generally going to be 288 E to 95 N to 895 N to 295 N to 64 E. No lights and chance of traffic is pretty low. It's at least 4-5 miles shorter than the one you suggest, but there is one big toll of $4.15 on 895.

Be aware traffic on 95 and 64 can be challenging depending on when you travel. Both are big summer beach vacation routes (morning travel to beaches can be bad, evening travel from beaches can be bad), but there are parallel alternatives to each. Rt. 1 for 95 and Rt. 60 for 64.

Jigray3, my thanks for your input, as time goes by, my inner city driving skills get rusty. Your advice and the others is what I was seeking.

Is it nice, the area I am wanting to visit?

My curiosity was tweaked about Mathews, Va, after reading a book about all the Merchant Marine sailors that came from Mathews,Va during WW II .

I had wanted to stay at Gwynns Island, but all the accomodations I found were a little too pricey for me, even after Labor Day.

Mainly, I just want to see the area, visit the town of Mathews, take my bike and pedal around town.

I would be driving during the week day to go to Mathews.

Sounds like you are talking about the Guinea Men from Gloucester Point area a little south of Mathews. Pretty tough bunch from what I understand, local high schools hate away games in that area. They are always spoiling for a fight.

Honestly, Mathews Co. would be a bit of an unusual choice for a vacation destination for most folks. It is very rural, there is not much to see or much in the way of entertainment, just a few very small towns, crossroads, and not many places to even find a decent room. The attraction is the Bay and its tributaries, and for access, you'll generally need a boat, a rented cottage, or a B&B on the water. From the water Mobjack Bay and the 4 rivers that feed it are beautiful, but there is no waterfront development of any sort if that's what you are looking for.

Gwynn's Island is the same way. The restaurant on the island seems to close every other year, and the rest are summer cottages and homes. South down 17 as you get into Gloucester toward Yorktown it gets busier, not necessarily more interesting, but busier.

I feel confident you can go and enjoy yourself, but you'll want to have a plan. Expecting to just bump into interesting things to do and see might not be the best way. Keep in mind I don't spend much time on land when I'm down there, but that's what you can expect. Expand your range to include Gloucester and York to the South, and Middlesex and Lancaster to the north and your options multiply.

Here's a start. The Rivah is a visitor's guide to the entire area. You can download a free copy from the linked page. I'll have some specific recommendations depending on where you are going or what you want to do.

Jigray, interesting assessment of the area. I've vever been, so it will be new to me. Rural, slowpaced areas, small towns appeal to me. I've seen and been in enough jam packed costal beaches, etc.

I will probaly just stay 3 days in Mathews

You have been very kind in giving me information , I sincerely appreciate it.
