"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

That is my understanding, this is to sell beer in America. Maybe they could have a cuatro de mayo to sell illicit drugs. Roll Eyes

I hate made up holidays as well. Over-commercializing actual ones is bad enough.

It was great in Alaska because all of the oilfield people who were from Texas or spent many years in Texas got together for parties. We brought our best homemade Mexican or TexMex dish, and it was the best Mexican food served in Alaska the entire year. I don't recall ever getting drunk at a Cinco de Mayo party, but I sure remember getting Thanksgiving full. That state had a love affair (e.g. 1 hour waits on weekends) with "Mexican" restaurants that made me yearn for Taco Bell.

Here in Houston, Cinco de Mayo is kind of like St. Patrick's day. I don't go anywhere near an Irish Pub on March 17th, and I don't go anywhere near a Mexican restaurant on May 5th.

A couple of (very white) ladies that are in my wife's country club bridge group are having a Cinco de Mayo party and we are going. Since they are both Cordon Bleu trained chefs, I expect the food will be really good. Here in the redneck riviera, Cinco de Mayo is an excuse for us white folks to throw a spring party to kick off the beach season; not a holiday.

Big Grin

Wife and I roll into Fairbanks when we moved there, stop at a "Mexican" place for lunch. The "Salsa" was just tomato paste with red chili flakes in it. Atrocious! Never had "Mexican" food in Alaska again. We discovered Thai food there, it was amazing, but then for some reason multiple Thai families moved to Fairbanks an opened restaurants. Confused

It's Paddy or Patrick, but never Patty or Pat.

Actually it's become much more Americanized over there with drinking and partying, it USED to be a rather minor religious holiday and nothing more.

I grew up on the east side in San Jose CA. The Bay Area has an enormous Mexican and Hispanic population. The 80s and 90s they had some serious near riots in the heavy Hispano arras including shutting down freeway off ramps to prevent even more people from getting there. I think most people know it’s BS holiday but the Mexican food is so good. I didn’t have a high school history teacher that gave an entire lecture about the French getting whipped in 1862 and the history of the French in Mexico up to that time.

IIRC in the battle of Puebla the Mexicans only stopped the French for a short time before the french regrouped and eventually overran the mexican positions. I' m not sure what they are actually supposed to be celebrating??

The Cinco de Mayo parade in Chicago got canceled this year. Some sort f dispute between the Mexican alderman and the Mexican organizer of the parade got out of hand and they called it off.

A Mexican Standoff, sort-of. Big Grin
