Rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated |
I was just gifted this challenge coin by a newer but great friend. He is ex Navy and law enforcement and now fully retired. He found out how much I appreciate Sig Sauers and wanted me to have this. I have never been given any challenge coins before. I'm ex Air Force, but don't recall any mention or anything at all to do with challenge coins during my tour. So, I thought it would be interesting and fun to see one or some of our members coins, and maybe a few lines about it. Thanks gang. I've only got the 1. Got it from member tatortodd on one of our motorcycle rides. It goes in a pocket when I'm on the bike now. The Enemy's gate is down.

I'm not where I can take a pic of it but I have a challenge coin from one of the flight crew members of the last 747 ever built and flown out of Seattle for Atlas.

I'm previous Air Force, we did have challenge coins passed out to us when I was stationed in south Korea. They were related to our hooch - pretty much every organization on base had a hooch on their premise and challenge coins. I haven't ever kept any otherwise, have seen some cool ones tho. <>< America, Land of the Free - because of the Brave

The Air Force now has a Coin Ceremony that happens after the Airman’s run to mark their graduation from Basic Training. It is presented to the Airman in formation by their head MCI (drill Sgt., etc..). Pretty cool ceremony and a cool challenge coin.

I also have a few. They weren't a "thing" during my active duty days. But working in military civil service witnessed being presented with a few which inspired me to get ones associated with past duty assignments. Subsequently I was presented with more not just from my commands where I was a civilian, and visiting commands I provided support to, as well as many friends, most senior officers who shared coins from their assignments. Got a couple from friends of my deceased "Devil Doc" son. And then there were a few from members here on the forum. And my late son had a few. Many, that we knew of and had pictures of were sadly missing from his personal effects. Very nice pic. I also have a few of the silver Sig coins, but I only learned of all the other types of challenge coins after joining up on this forum. Nice memories many of you guys have there. "Someday I hope to be half the man my bird-dog thinks I am." looking forward to 4 years of TRUMP!

It's all part of the adventure... |
I have many challenge coins. However, only a few were presented to me, others I purchased from various units/organizations I visited/supported/inspected. There are four on my desk at work that were presented to me by Commanders/Directors, but I don’t have pics of those available. Back before I retired from active duty USAF, I was in a couple units that took challenge coins pretty seriously. You should always have your unit coin on you. If someone “drops” their coin on the table/bar, they are challenging; if you (or anyone else present) are caught without yours, you’re buying! However, if you (or anyone else present) have your coin, then the one who challenged buys for all present! Normally it only applies to the members of the unit, but that’s always negotiable. In some units accidental drops count, as one poor guy discovered when he was fiddling with his coin during Commander’s Call — that was an expensive lesson. If I can post it correctly, here is a picture of some of my challenge coins. Edited: Hopefully fixed the picture! This message has been edited. That's a neat coin! I've got a bunch, I keep them in a bag in my night stand. From what I understand, the Challenge Coin started in the Special Community and the Conventional guys picked it up. I've got one coin from a support element that could double as a manhole cover! IMHO the best coins are the ones you get for going the extra mile for somebody. I've got a couple of those. I do carry one in my duty uniform. It's a ST Michael's Coin I got from my brother, the police officer.

I don’t have a lot, but I do collect them and this is what I have. Here are four that have special meaning to me. The first one is the first challenge coin I ever got. I got it when I became a Certified Forensic Interviewer (CFI). The next one is my agency’s coin; this is the second rendition of it. The last two I received from investigators on separate cases we worked together that were pretty crazy and very difficult cases. I carry several of my agency’s coins with me when I go work with another agency across the state and if it is a good investigation and a good investigator, I will give them a coin. There are a lot of agencies that can’t give one back because they don’t have one. NRA Benefactor Life Member

Great timing on this thread. Never a collector although I have few. They are mostly from my department. While sitting in my car someone just walked up and gave me a Secret Service Coin. Might end up giving it away in the future but for now will go in my drawer at home. IMG_7742 by Adam, on Flickr IMG_7741 by Adam, on Flickr

Alyron, some of our crew members at my EMS employer have received them when crewing for Presidential motorcades. I really hope to get a chance to be on one of those crews before I retire. __________________________ Writing the next chapter that I've been looking forward to.

My platoon sergeant ended up working the Secret Service for then VP Biden when he visited our FOB in Afghanistan. He ended up getting a coin from them. Sort of related, we had a JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller) from the Air Force on the FOB with us. He integrated combat aircraft into operations and was heavily involved in this visit. He's on the phone, tells the other person to hang on, covers the mic and says very loudly in the TOC (Tactical Operations Center), "hey! Does anyone know if the vice president is visiting on Thursday???" We had kept it on low key because we didn't want the Soldiers talking about it and making it a prime opportunity to attack. Very few times have I actually felt safe while deployed. Couple of fixed wing flying high, couple of Apaches patrolling, howitzers laid on pre-planned targets. _____________
