The eggs. Many a time as a child, I reached into the nesting box in the henhouse to find Mr. Blacksnake after a dinner of eggs.

Chickens not so much in my experience, but guineas are good. They won't necessarily kill larger snakes, but they'll let you know they are there and keep them away. They're great at bug control too. Noisy though.
