Question about Academy Sports
Academy is new in my area. I went there last week, and they refused to show me a gun unless they had my ID in hand. Is this a national policy at this store, or a local thing? I ask the counter man, but he was a jerk and wouldn't give me a straight answer. Matter of fact, he acted like he didn't want me there at all so I accommodated him.

They do that. It is, I think, antitheft.

Interesting. Five stores that sell guns in a few mile radius, and they're the ones with this policy. Oh well, I wasn't much impressed with the store anyway.

Ours doesn’t. I ask and they show. But I have enough gray they know I’m old enough to buy one.

I've never been asked for any ID. Maybe it's something new that they're trying out.

I am a big fan of academy sports
I have shopped at a few but I have never been asked for ID.

I am mad that they built one a few miles from the old neighborhood where I used to live in Richmond/Henrico, VA.

My Academy wants ID, very limited inspection, no operating slide or trigger pulling. After purchasing, they take it to exit before handing over. Irritating but was decent price and no issues with purchase.

You won’t run if the have your ID, it’s like a test drive if I had to guess.

Haven't been gun shopping in a long time so not sure about the ID thing.
Years ago they would have decent sales on ammo and shotgun shells.
Always liked the clothing and shoe selection at ours. They have lots of good stuff that is more local then the Cabalas or Bass Pro stores.

Ask for their ID on exchange, it's only fair.

Academy has been in our market for some time. The clerks are limited in their knowledge. The local pawn shop has better deals and sell more guns than anyone in the state. They are somewhat arrogant but knowledgeable.
I bought a shotgun from Acadnemy and they insisted the clerk carry it to the sidewalk. Better prices and knowledge are found elsewhere,

Three Academy stores within driving distance of me . None of them have ever asked for an ID . They have the lowest prices around but don't go there looking for knowledge . Do your own homework .

My local Academy has never asked for ID to see a gun.

One is 4 miles away, they are happy to let you do hands on without showing ID. Of course, the handguns all have the miserable trigger lock, so you can’t get the proper feel for trigger reach or pull.
There are better, less costly gun stores reasonably close so Academy only sells me ammo or targets or some Magpul accessories.

The LGS here regularly has lower prices than the nearest Academy. (150 miles away) In fact, guns may be the only thing we can buy more cheaply locally. Groceries and gas certainly cost more here. And the guys that run the LGS are knowledgeable.

Sounds like there may be a theft problem in that area if all five stores do it.

We were in the Gatlinburg areas the summer and stopped at the big Christmas store in Pigeon Forge and they had armed security this summer. Found out they had theft mobs targeting them as they had a room with expensive ornaments that got cleaned out. These mobs are hitting areas that used to be pretty much immune from such stuff. They send in a small team to cause distract employees and then the thieves come in.

Never had to do this at the one by me. Maybe this is something new, as I haven't asked to check out a firearm in a while.

Ha, this made me think they can see I'm slow enough that they can afford to wait the 30 minutes for the police to arrive and still find me trying to get to my car in their parking lot!

My Academy has never requested an ID to look at a gun. I have bought several guns there. I buy a lot of assorted items there too. I love the store.
