WarhorseLet's talk about anti virus software
I bought a new 'puter this last black Friday. It came with a free trial of Norton anti virus. I am trying to see if there is a better option out there.
I dropped my paid for Avast subscription on my old 'puter after it started acting up, and was surprisingly happy just running Windows Defender.

ArtieSI just bought a new windows machine at the beginning of December on the advice of a local computer consultant. He recommended i just stick with Windows Defender.
I had been an Avast customer for a long time, but it got slow and bitchy, and I dropped it.

craigcpaWindows Defender.
All else on a lone computer is superfluous. Now, is your router secured?

clubleaf206I’ve seen it mentioned that Norton is a resource hog. I use malwarebytes, superantispyware, avast and windows defender, they all play well with each other.

Pipe SmokerMalwarebytes (free version) for me. I don’t have cycle-stealing real time protection enabled. Instead, I do this once a day:
* Disconnect from the Internet.
* Run a Malwarebytes scan (takes 9 seconds).
* If I get a “Congratulations, you are clean!” report (always do), then I do a backup. That way, I know that all of my backups are clean.
* Reconnect to the Internet and resume operations.

cruiser68Been running Eset Smart Security on quote a few computers. Resource usage is very low and, knock on wood, I have not had any issues in many years.

erj_pilotNorton? Yeah...ditched that bitch YEARS ago. I wouldn't recommend it for single-system use, but might...MIGHT...use it as a server-based application as a LAST resort. Defender in Windows 10 does a good enough job, IMHO. If you want to couple that with Malwarebytes "just because", that would probably work out OK.
I'm about to install a new Dell Windows 10 system for my mother this coming week and plan on just using Defender updated automatically.

AeteoclesWindows Defender.
Then, set up regular backups of your data.
Then, set up an air-gapped backup of your backup.
