Only from watching the news and reading online do I get to see a far away picture of the islands China is putting missile defense and landing strips on. I have never been past Hawaii in the Pacific and I wonder, how will these islands hold up against typhoons and other weather events? Do they have some elevation to them or are they just above sea level? Living the Dream

They have functioned quite well thus far and weathered two seasons of typhoons although some did suffer some damage and bouts of sand erosion. They have made some modifications since to the sea walls on a few of these installations to reduce erosion effects... ______________________________________________ Life is short. Wild guess would a decent sized ordinance be able to collapse an island if its just dredged. What man is a man that does not make the world better. -Balian of Ibelin Only boring people get bored. - Ruth Burke

Dredging sand creates an unstable beach. “Dredged beaches also have profile anomalies that can cause ponding in response to summer storms.“ Dredged sand also has been rolled and smoothed by wave action. As a result it does not “stick” as well as sand from a land source. Kansai International Airport, built on an artificial island off Osaka, Japan, sank 27 feet in its first 5 years. This was due to the subsoils compressing. No doubt the Chise islands will do the same. I’m certain maintaining the new islands will be an ongoing operation. https://www.deseretnews.com/ar...-into-the-ocean.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...nternational_Airport “ The work of destruction is quick, easy and exhilarating; the work of creation is slow, laborious and dull.
