My wife & I liked the Crown too. From the series it looked like they did some underhanded stuff from time to time, but even though they were of the privileged class, it seemed that Phillip & especially the Queen always put the interests of the country first. ------------------------------------------------ "It's hard to imagine a more stupid or dangerous way of making decisions, than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong." I believe his official title was something along Queen’s Consort or something like that. They had to alter the rules to give him the Prince title. It is a little strange they had to “wrangle” that as he was a royal by birth and both he and the queen are great (or great great) grandchildren of Queen Victoria. But, hey, who isn’t? -Loungechair

Anything that brings an end to monarchs ruling people is a good news day. Maybe she'll dissolve it all and end the absurd practice before she dies, however ceremonial it is now. And 99years is a long life. What a run. We should all be so lucky. Maybe the ginger one will stay over there now.

Rest in Peace Prince. As for the Queen, she should extend a warm welcome to her grandson, Prince Harry and make it very clear, his whiney bitch of a wife is not allowed to be present or on royal grounds. Gotta say that I abhor monarchies. Nothing personal against Prince Phillip, I just don't get the hoo-ha around monarchies. Interesting quote of his from 1988: “In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, to contribute something to solving overpopulation.” -Prince Phillip https://www.msn.com/en-us/life...surfaces/ar-BB1ftOBz “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.” - John Adams

I can tell you that I have British clients who love the Royals and the monarchal system. Obviously they are a microscopic sample but their perspective is most of the population shares their pride in their monarchy. We may not understand or appreciate it but it seems to be voluntary so to each his own. RIP Prince Phillip. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

Funny enough, one of our friends is British - she loathes the monarchy and is very vocal about it. She has become a US citizen. Again - I'm not knocking the ones who love them, I just don't understand US citizens who follow every word and every 'scandal' of the British monarchy. Cry over Royals and weddings, etc. I just don't get it is all I'm saying. “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.” - John Adams

I figure if the Brits don’t want a monarchy they can get rid of them. I suspect they are a point of pride to them. I don’t want any, could care less about their antics but it’s really none of my business.

Seriously, that's your takeaway? He was by all accounts a good man, served his country well, and was a longstanding friend to our country, and his death makes it a "good news day?" Dude. Asshole move.

The man was a decorated war veteran, a devout spouse, and worked until the age of 96. You, sir, have no class.

He didn't rule anyone, and neither does the queen. You know that. They just preserve the tradition and the trappings. I'll admire his long life of service to his adopted country. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

G-g-grandchildren of the same person can be as closely related as siblings or as distantly as 3rd Cousins. In a typical family group there would be many more 2nd and 3rd Cousins than siblings and 1st Cousins. Prince Phillip was a fine man. RIP, sir (Your Majesty, for the Brits). flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

99 years is a long life indeed and to be out of the reach of the I.R.A. is a plus. Unlike his Uncle. ********* "Some people are alive today because it's against the law to kill them".

Ah, not exactly 'knew' each other. We met on two occasions, with me standing in the line and him walking up and down it, once in the pouring rain. We were both very wet. The first time he asked if I was related to the general of the same family name. 'No, Sir, alas', I said, 'he's rich and I'm not'. The second time he said 'What kind of a deal have you got going on here? Last time I saw you you were a shiny new Warrant Officer, and here you are, less than two years later, a bloody Captain! You must let me know how you do it!' He was our Colonel-in-Chief, and worth his weight in diamonds and rubies. RIP, Sir.

Tac - the thing that I remember the most is how easily he put you at ease when you were meeting him. He was very well briefed. I remember his Aide - Commander George Manson - met with each of us before the ceremony and we gave him a quickie index card of a few things about each of us when I was called up to be presented my decoration, it was almost as if he was reading the card - engaging smile and a good handshake before getting down to business the second time I met him was in a receiving line for the Queen and he was aware that we had met before
