Is 2:40 enough time to connect with a domestic flight?

In early May we're arriving on a United 777, airport site says international arrivals are Terminals B or C. We have Global Entry and will connect with a United (not United Express) flight to Chicago. I assume we will have to go through TSA again, we have Pre-Check.

Will 2:40 be enough time?

With a sample size of one, it was literally no trouble or time. We flew into Newark from London in October, and simply passed the through what looked like a custom area. There was no real line and we did not have to speak to anyone or make any declarations. I think if you had something to declare you could do so, but if not you just walked on by.

At least that’s my memory of it; it was such a non-event that I didn’t pay a lot of attention.

Efficient and government entities don’t generally go in the same sentence.

Yes that is plenty of time. Now if UAL is on time is a different story. You should be fine

2:40 SHOULD be more than enough time. Not sure if EWU has added/updating their GE kiosks, that'll help speed the lines through for sure.

You will need to re-enter via TSA security to get to your domestic flight, however your GE has TSA-Pre so that SHOULD make the lines/wait much more bearable.

We're used to the kiosks at ORD, I expect EWR will be similar.

We're on United all the way from Venice to our home airport, Moline IL (MLI). If EWR international arrivals are like ORD we'll grab our bags for the quick customs check and then turn them back over to United.

Last fall we cleared customs at Houston (IAH), the TSA check point there did NOT offer pre-check. We could have gone to another distant entry control point to use pre-check, but it wasn't worth the hassle.

HATE morning flights out of Venice, give yourself enough time; I always preferred flying into VCE vs flight out. Taking a water taxi from Venice directly to the airport is a very nice way to end your vacation and avoid any vehicular traffic or...just get a hotel on the mainland near the airport.

Once back in the US, things SHOULD move, just keep a flexible mindset, you're crossing all sorts of borders, security lines and various jurisdicitons. The amusement is watching the infrequent traveler that looses their composure or, burdens themselves due to poor packing.

flew into Newark from Munich a month, landed mid afternoon. was thru customs and immigration in less than 20 minutes.

FWIW, we leave Venice at 11:05AM and land at EWR at 2:20PM. Pretty fast, eh?

Coming in from India in January, Global Entry at Newark was no problem at all. Just minutes, mostly because half the kiosks were broken.

I had time to get my Clear account setup even though that whole thing is a clusterfuck because they don't tell you what you need to do. You have to ask someone to get you a setup agent to go through the biometrics. Not even a sign on the kiosks about how to do it.

Also found out too late that I could have done my Global Entry renewal interview on arrival because it's damn near impossible to get scheduled interviews anywhere now.

With Global Entry you will be fine. I've been at baggage claim in under 5 min from walking off the plane. The lines thereafter can be hours long, but GE bypasses all that BS. And you have to recheck the bags for domestic connections. That said, EWR restaurant prices are INSANE. I hate that airport for it.

As long as your flight is on time you will be fine and even if it's a little late you should still be fine with Global Entry.

As Rick said you have to recheck your bags but usually it's simple. After clearing customs there will be a place to recheck them. It's usually as simple as handing them to an employee that puts them on a convey belt since they are already tagged.

Flight Delays Will Spike This Summer Due to FAA Staffing Shortages, the Agency Warns

Union leader says the FAA is taking some positive steps to address the crisis, but a solution is years away.

Staffing shortages among federal air traffic controllers have become so dire that the Federal Aviation Administration is asking airlines in certain areas to make fewer flights this summer, as employee groups are pleading with the agency to overhaul how it makes hiring decisions.

Staffing levels of certified controllers within the FAA are at 81% of the target nationally, the agency said in a notice on Wednesday. At the facility that provides service to the three major New York City-area airports, that figure is just 54%. FAA said operations in the New York area are expected to increase by 7% this summer, which, due to those staffing issues, will result in a 45% spike in delays. The agency is looking to address the issue by shifting Newark's radar operations to Philadelphia, but that is not slated to take place until September...

Just an FYI, I’ve seen those FAA staffing shortages myself. Lots of spokes in the wheel to keep things running smoothly.
