So I got bit by the hidden text of "subscription required" in the Quicken purchased last year. As my wife keeps the home books, she just informed me Quicken no longer works (as of four months ago?).

Do not need (read: DO NOT want) for the software to access my banking. Essentially looking for a glorified Excel file which can "easily" have a Quicken file installed and, pie charts and other whatnot to easily view spending habits and trends.

TIA

Mine still works. I've been ignoring the messages, although they do take up real estate on the program window. There are two separate panels that tell me that my membership has expired. Really, one big panel wasn't enough?

I did look at replacements. The best one out there was GnuCash, but it didn't import my Quicken info fully.

If your just doing home books go onto eBay and buy an older version.

Just not too old.

I had a very old version that would not work with windows 10 so needed to upgrade bought an older version that did not require a subscription, but still worked with windows 10.

Looks like the older versions do not play well with Win10?

Intrepid - wife does the home booking (as a PM, I am pretty tired of dealing with money numbers on any given day)

V-Tail, thank, will look into it.

I've been looking for a replacement for quite some time.

Started using Quicken in 1992. I've been using the 2000 version for a long time. Last version that I've liked and it still works on Windows 10. The online features don't work, but I've never used them.

You don't need a substitute, just keep on using Quicken. The only effect of the expiration is not being able to download the banks/financial accounts.

I got a new computer last year with Windows 10. My Quicken 2014 loaded and runs fine. Can't download anything but don't care.

Maybe I (read; SWMBO) am not doing this right. Sounds like when she's working in there, the "YOU MUST PAY US" screen shot pops up after every entry.

The only substitutes for Quicken now are web sites and apps.

As people move away from home computers to smart phones and tablets, Quicken has been the only program left for the PC.

I am actually dreading the day when Quicken goes away as a program.

I think I pay $70 a year for the subscription and I think it's worth it.

I understand your hesitation to use the connectivity of Quicken to your financial institutions but, in my opinion, using Quicken without allowing it to download from your financial institutions like banking, credit cards, and stock broker accounts is like cutting down trees with a chain saw... without starting the chain saw.

With downloading, I don't have to wait for the statements to be available to see what transactions came through. And I don't have to type each transaction to enter it.

I use MoneyDance.

It's available for Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. Also an iOS version that syncs with the desktop. Not a subscription, no ongoing fees to use it once you buy it.

V-Tail, will Moneydance import Quicken data? I'd like to be able to maintain access to old info, it comes in handy more than you'd think. That's why I didn't end up migrating to GnuCash.

LS1 GTO, I'm using Quicken 2018. I get the annoyance panels in the app, but no pop-ups. I've been able to continue to use.

I do not know. That question might be answered on the MoneyDance website (I posted a link, above, but it's MoneyDance.com).

If that information is not on the website, you could check the user manual, and if not there, you could ask their support team -- they have been very responsive to any questions that I have asked them in the past.

They make it sound like the end of the world - that's their new business model - but it's more like the end of the first bag of popcorn at the movies. Wink

If I were you, I'd put eyes on the messaging Quicken is showing your wife. There may be some versions that have expired and no longer function at all after the membership expiration (Quicken Starter) but for most recent versions what happens is no more software updates and no downloading of financials. Good to know just in case. The killer part is overcoming the reluctance to switch. For example, I've been an Evernote user since 2012 (much later than I've been a user of Quicken). I only switched to OneNote last October because it comes bundled with Microsoft Office and a 1 TB volume on OneDrive. My main reason was to maintain updated Office suite.

I wish I had switched to OneNote at least 5 years ago as it's much more functional than Evernote.

I'll have to research some more between the two programs.

Thanks again.

Yes.

There are also extensions available that will import/export CSV and other standard formats for use with other applications, databases, etc.

I've been using MoneyDance for over 20 years, I won't say there has never been a glitch, but it has been very solid in general and the support has been excellent when I've hit a snag.

I just downloaded the trial version, and it appears to have imported my Quicken file no problem. All the accounts are there, all the transaction splits, all the data (as far as I can tell) since 1993 when I began using it.

When I got a new box with win 10, wife was using Quicken basic. I searched web and found a way to upgrade that has worked fine. It required upgrade to Quicken 9, then to Quicken 13. Both can be found free on web site, just no longer supported. There is even a way to turn off msg to register. Of course, no online access. We use it as checkbook and create reports. If you don’t need to download files from bank, etc., works fine. Keep your old files as you go.
