You might want to edit your inaccurate thread title. As for why she's "worth it," the alternatives are 1) let the hecklers have her, or 2) replace her because the hecklers say so. The money isn't being spent for her, it's being spent for the office. And 5 million isn't even a rounding error in the budget. You can be against waste in general, but acting like this is a lot of money is silly. There IS a lot of waste in BIG government -it's the nature of the beast. Should we do something about it? Can we? Sure. It's a question of degree. So let's start trimming - SOE can go - let the states do it. And for me, maybe EPA. And maybe VHA. Maybe we don't need a Vice President. Heck, maybe not even a President. Then we wouldn't have to worry about protecting ex-Presidents. Maybe we don't even need a government - no more taxes. Just leave me alone to do what I want on my land, in my house, with my family. I got my own protection. That's a pretty common thread, some parts. We're now back to the first century. The ultimate problem with that is, me and my pals in the next county will organize, because, well, power. Then we'll come and take your house, and your family, and your land. And your life. So maybe we need some sort of organization, because, well, protection. So now we're back to City-States. And somebody will be in charge, with perks. Because otherwise, nobody would want the job. Comes with some risk. And maybe some City-States will want to combine, because other City-States want to combine and take our lands and houses. Because, well, power. And now we have overhead, with a need for resources. And revenue. So now we have Government again - capitalized. If we could only build it the way I want it, with what I want, just for me. Oh baloney. She's just a hatchet(wo)man. Any asshole could do what's she's doing, job wise. If all of SIGforum were standing in a room you could toss a penny and hit a dozen people who could do what she's doing. So let's not pretend she's uniquely qualified, or special, or doing anything all that difficult. She can't just wish away the Education department either, so what is it you think she's really doing and going to do? It's bullshit work, however it may align with your wishes and personal philosophy. And anyone who doesn't think $5 million or more a year is enough money to worry about is out of their mind, and exemplifying the very problem. It IS absurdly wasteful. And she isn't that important, nor is her office, and while I can appreciate the sentiment that one needs to Protect the Billet - she's barely more important to the Billet than the Gate Guard at the Whitehouse, and even that's only because she's in the Line of Succession at all, at 14th. The idea that the threat is both big and real enough to even take note of AND ambiguous and nebulous enough that she needs around the clock protection for years - everywhere - is fucking ludicrous. I could probably do the job... without that much security, but it's NOT bullshit work. Draining the swamp, un-doing the huge bureaucracy, is not for the faint of heart. She is meeting great resistance in what she is trying to accomplish.
I do agree that it is a lot of money and that government is bloated and ineffective. The security isn’t about her personally. It’s about the job. If she gets killed while doing what she’s doing, while there are a lot of people could do it, fewer people will want to. And if someone steps up to do the exact same thing and they get killed then the number of people shrinks even further. It’s not about protecting someone who can, it’s about making sure someone always will. Of course it’s totally possible that the threat doesn’t warrant the protection but it’s just as possible that there has been a credible threat on her life that we don’t know about. I don’t know every threat made against her. I don’t know if those threats warrant the level of protection she is getting. I don’t know if the level of protection she is getting should cost what it does. I think it's a mix of regular old Wasteful Bureaucracy and some Political Grandstanding to further fuel the Us vs Them, Left vs Right, narrative, and it appears to be working famously. I hope to be proven wrong about this one day, I truly do, but I wouldn't bet those odds. Who knows, maybe Tater is right... maybe the Weatherman of old are spinning up sleeper cells nationwide as we speak. Beatniks and hippies and teachers are sharpening their letter openers, taking trips to Cuba via San Juan to train with AKs and RPGs, all to stop evil Betsy. Yeah, that's it. In our "protests" during the Stockley verdict, you could see the crazy in the eyes of most of people we arrested, it was all about the power of the mob and covering your face that gave them the confidence to assault their fellow citizens and commit violence. . I do believe a few of the some more radical teacher's union officials have called for her death. In this day and world, that is a threat we have to take seriously, otherwise we will end up like Columbia; don't like the courts and criminal justice, kill judges and keep killing them until no honest person wants the job. Don't like the way the laws are written, kill the legislatures until no honest person wants that job.
