The Royal Marines are both inheritors of great military traditions and creators of great military institutions.

The long parade a few weeks ago.

I can't begin to imagine the hours of practice it took to pull off that long parade. Stunning music.

Tac - what's the significance of the 'leopard skins' on those with some of the bigger drums?

I will take a WAG and say from service in Africa or India, it's probably a campaign badge

That's better than what I was thinking. I was going to say that maybe Elton John had a yard sale.

Happy Birthday Royal Marines.

God bless, tac.

Time for a rendition of "Bless 'em All" or should we sing one of the alternatives...

"I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation."

Alfred Hornik, Sunday, December 2, 1945 to his family, on his continuing duty to others for surviving WW II.

I believe we have Napoleon to thank for this. At some stage in his quest for an empire he came across African drummers who wore animal skins and he was so impressed with the spectacle that he introduced the idea into his army. The Brits were rather keen not to be outdone by this and copied the idea. I suppose animal skins have been worn as part of the military show since men first gathered in tribal groups.

PASig is pretty much on it - you need to be in the place where these animals can be shot legally for their skins, rather than doing a sneak 'safari' to a local wildlife park.

When one of our Highland Regiments sallied forth o'er the ocean to pay a visit to a New York parade in the noughties, their genuine leopard skins were 'seized' on arrival - they were not permitted to import them pro tem, even though they were part of a military dress. Fakes were obtained at short notice to calm the authorities, and the parade went off well.
