Our Insinkerator Badger 5 is leaking from the bottom. Everything I'm seeing tells me it's just time to replace it. Looks like these last anywhere from 2-5 years. They're about a hundred bucks online.

Now, being around on Sigforum as long as I have, I searched first for, if you can believe it, "Waste Kang." Big Grin

I was pleased to discover their 1hp model is the same, or less than the Insinkerator and has a 20 year warranty. Is the Legend the one to get? Are there other, better options for the price? I don't mind spending a little more. My criteria are that it doesn't shit the bed in two years, and in the meantime, works well with an eye towards quiet operation. My wife really wants something that's not going to vibrate the counter and walk dishes off into the sink to get broken, apparently that happened once at our old place and it was a glass she really liked.

Me being a guy raised on Home Improvement, I want a Binford 9000 - something I could feed a whole turkey dinner and have it just suck it down, but unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. Big Grin

I put a 3/4 hp Kang in at our old house when the Badger puked all fluids into the bottom cabinet.
The Kang was quieter & more powerful. Would buy again.

I put in a Waste King 8000 about 6 years ago and it's still going strong.

FYI, Moen bought Waste Kang a few years back. I view that as a good thing.

I installed the Waste Kang 9980 when I lived in Alaska and it was awesome. Compared to the similarly priced Badger, it was quieter, more powerful, and better warranty.

I have a Waste Kang 9980 (i.e. 1 hp and same 3-bolt flange as InSinkErator for easy install) sitting on the shelf waiting for the builder's InSinkErator Badger to die. I caught it on sale for $107. Theoretically, I can have my sink back in 30 minutes after failure or even better swap it out if the existing one starts making noises like failure is imminent.

That's a stark contrast to when my builder's grade InSinkErator Badger failed in Alaska. It was winter, and I was having 20ish people over for an indoor fish fry. I had thawed out a bunch of halibut to batter and fry in peanut oil. The GD disposal broke after I had started pouring the juice out of the vacuum sealed halibut packs. When I wasn't looking guests would throw more junk into the broken disposal. I fished the junk out as best I could after guest left and put a plug into it while I waited for the Waste Kang to arrive. It was pretty gross taking off the old one, and left a sufficient impression on me to:
  • having a Waste Kang waiting in the wings right now.
  • participating in nearly every Waste Kang thread since then

When the Insinkerator espies the Waste Kang sitting on the shelf, it doesn't dare hiccup for fear of losing its job. It does seem that having a readily available spare unit at hand extends the life of an appliance or tool well beyond its usual life. I see you there Murphy, hiding behind the refrigerator, you're not fooling anybody!

Waste King...no question. Ours is eight years old and still going strong. It's a half horse but would still chew up an anvil.

    83 bucks on Amazon.

The Waste King I have has been good. If it wasn't an open box price reduction at Best Buy, I don't think they are any superior to other brands. when my Insinkcerator went down they sent replacement overnight and it was 5 years old. Good on them. Get a minimum 3/4hp on any brand.

    YMMV now.

But I replaced a 2 year old Badger w/ an Evolution (shortie - direct fit). Strong, quiet and eat everything we give it.

It's lasted 22 years w/o any issues. Still going strong. And since I'm not handy, it was basically a direct fit replacement to the Badger (which was complete crap).

I'd probably go the same route if the current one every dies.

Well, the baby yaks will be happy. I ordered a 1hp yesterday, should have it tomorrow. Would have been here today if my wife hadn’t been in an itch to have it done and argued for me just buying one locally, and in the time it took me to look, the next day option rolled over to Tuesday. Neither Home Despot nor Lowe’s carried Waste King, and when she complained, I made her an offer: I could buy another Badger, but she would install it and the next one when it dies because I would not. Or. She could wait two days and I’ll install the Waste King and be done with it. She didn’t like her choices, but she opted to let me order the Waste King. I got some Boar’s Bead cold cuts and the bread she likes on the way home, and we’re doing with paper plates for now. Razz

I think you'll be pleased with the Waste King.

I installed a Waste King L-2600 Legend Series 1/2 HP almost 7 years ago and it's been flawless.

    Beat me to it.

I put in a Waste King 3/4hp I think it was 5-7 years ago. I bet I could direct feed it a broom handle like a woodchipper.

I went with the 1 HP. I also bought a "noise reduction shock absorber bracket that supports the disposal unit. It can't hurt.

Also a member of the Kang Gang here. Have a 1HP L-8000. It’s awesome. Could probably force feed it an entire broom and it wouldn’t flinch.

I got a 3/4 HP Waste Kang two years ago after my previous (15 year-old Kenmore) disposal kept seizing from rust. No issues so far and I don't expect any. I put a removable strainer in the drain to keep stuff out when not in use.

Ok, I got a good laugh out of that. Big Grin

I'm looking forward to that kind of performance. My wife hassled me about putting a grapefruit peel down this one because it smelled a little funky and I figured I'd skip the bleach. "They're not meant to handle that, you'll burn it out." I thought she was nuts, but maybe it was me who finished off this piece of shit Badger after all. It ought to be able to handle the odd citrus peel. Isn't that the point? It grinds up food waste? Confused

Regardless, we'll find out tonight. It should be here by 9pm, and as soon as it arrives, I'm swapping it out.
