Don't forget the HUGE role the ACLU plays in the "bail reform" movement. In NC, the ACLU has been filing Federal Lawsuits against County Sheriffs and Magistrates Offices. Why? We are placing high bonds on too many felons. Bonds they can't make and they remain in jail, pending trial. I know, because they named me in a lawsuit in the County where I just resigned from.
I'm old enough to recall when the ACLU represented......most of the time, American interests. No longer. Only socialist causes are of any concern to the ACLU. Regards 18DAI

“Bail reform” bears some of the responsibility, but 100 percent falls on the state legislature. They passed it. Each time I read comments about it being the fault of “liberal judges”, I have to chuckle because judges have to follow the laws enacted by legislatures. They enact all this crap, then sit idly as all the public blame goes anywhere but where it belongs.
Want to see it in action? Recently, the state legislature raised felony statues from over $500 to $1000. Now, a thief can steal twice the amount of your stuff before it’s a felony. Why? They stated that “inflation and whatnot”. But, bail continues to GO DOWN instead of their straw man “inflation and whatnot” excuses. And this is. Legislature with a Republican super majority?

In a world where people worship at the feet of "us" or "them", "elephant" or "donkey", it's pretty freeing when people stop to realize that both can be true.
The perpetrator can be at fault and also the politicized legal system can be partially to blame.

The problem is really the prisons and jails are full to capacity and the courts are overwhelmed.
It apparently does not occur to these people that if facing justice actually involved something painful there'd be far fewer people desiring to do so.

Actually, the ones that are only filled to capacity are the lucky ones. Ours is at like 160% and routinely turns down the booking in of arrestees, and frequently operates on a one in, one out plan. ^^^ One, I'm blown away that they would drive an hour and a half to two hours just to loot another RealReal store.
Two, Palo Alto is down in the heart of Silicon Valley. Funny how San Francisco, where a lot of silicon workers live, will put up with that crap, but the Peninsula, where the silicon barons live, won't.
Three, they're getting careless. Stealing $15,000 worth of goods is way beyond a misdemeanor, even in present-day California.
