Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.

At the onslaught of covid there was stories of people that were stuck on cruise ships longer then their time.
A recent conversation brought up the question of who payed the cost for them? The cruise line or the cruisers?

I would guess the cruise line. To do otherwise would cause an uproar.

We were on a cruise in the Hawaiian Islands and got off the ship on Feb 29 4 years ago. It kind of all blew up right after we got home.

When we flew over, there were only 3 or 4 cases in California and maybe 1 in Hawaii. The cruise ship was really pushing hand sanitizer, but nothing else. When we flew home, there were people with bandanas over their faces and one guy wearing a wood working mask with a hole in it so you could breathe.

In over 20 years of going on cruises, so far, my wife and I have never been stuck on a ship longer than we were suppose to be.
We were on a cruise out of Florida two weeks before cruising shut down for Covid. While we were waiting to get off the ship to head home friends were texting us asking if we were healthy and were they letting us off the ship. We replied why.
We had not watched the news for over a week and were unaware what had been going on around the world in the cruise industry.
The day we got off the ship was March 7th 2020 and one week later cruising shut down.

With that said I have heard of cruises delayed getting back to port due to bad weather. In those cases from what I have heard the cruise lines do not charge the guest anything for the extra days at sea however the guest are usually responsible for any on board charged they incur on the extra days. Things like bar tab, specialty dinning, gift shop purchases and things like that.
Once again my wife and I have never experienced this, however this is what I have heard.

As far as missed flights, missed hotel reservations, or any thing like that, you may be out of pocket on those. I would guess it would be up to the cruise line as to how they want to handle it.

This is why it is always a good idea to have some sort of travel insurance.

My brother and SIL take at least one cruise a year. He has told me they test you on boarding, and, if positive, you go to the quarantine deck (one whole deck dedicated to quarantine), until you test negative.

Glad we didn’t see that video three weeks ago. Went on a 9 day cruise to the A,B,C islands.
I admit I was getting antsy towards the end. Can’t imagine being held in our rooms for two weeks, they’d have gone through a lot of ribeyes!

On a side note, we have cruised with Princess, Royal, and now Celebrity. Each have their differences. Celebrity had the nicest, friendliest crew! I can’t tell you how many times I was welcomed with a “good morning “ in the Oasis getting breakfast. Looking at the passengers that couldn’t help but smile I felt the good energy on the ship was contagious.
But I will say there were still a few ungrateful snobs accompanying us that needed a good long swim!

I've vacationed at Port of Canaveral and have watched them come and go. It's interesting.
But that's as close as I'll come to getting on one of these behemoths.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Did he say what cruise line they sail with? I thought most cruise lines did away with that.

My wife and I have been on two cruises since the cruise lines started sailing again, however we waited till the cruise lines removed their requirements.

The first cruise was right after Disney removed the vaccine requirement, pre sail testing requirement and the required testing while on the ship. This was November 2022. The second was in 2023.

The cruise line did not test you unless you reported symptoms and if you tested positive, at the time you were confined to your cabin.

I do remember right after the no sail order was lifted the cruise lines were sailing with vaccine requirements, testing requirements and some other requirements depending on the cruise line. They were also sailing with limited capacity.

Back then I do remember reading about isolation decks on the ships if someone tested positive however I think they have eliminated them, however some may still have them.

The cruise contract clearly states the itinerary can be changed for any reason. In short, if they extend the length it is not an additional per-night cost to the passenger.

We went on a cruise February 29th, 2020. We'd heard a few murmurs of some flu-like thing overseas but weren't worried in the least. A week after we got home there were outbreaks and ships were denied docking.

But in Asia they'd already had big problems. A friend who works on cruise ships told me they were denied docking in several ports in January 2020. Singapore was one.

We didn't cruise again until 2023 because I am un-jabbed, and was thus prohibited by CDC from cruising, and prohibited by many countries from entry.

We did 3 cruises last year and will do 2 this year. The first is a combination solar eclipse and Panama Canal, the second is Alaska.

We ain't scared, except of intestinal illness from the buffet!

I met a sailor who had just left the service. I asked him why he had gotten out, and he said he was on a cruise when covid broke out, and couldn't really leave the ship for 21 months. He did say that twice they were allowed to get off on a pier where tents and a picnic area was set up, but other than that, almost two years on a ship. He also had to remain for several months beyond his term of service.

I did not ask, since I am not interested in taking any cruise. It was a couple of years ago he told me that.
