I have recently been diagnosed with COPD. I’m hesitant to use the Spiriva up until now because it is antichlorinergic and often causes urinary retention . I have BPH and take an alpha 1 med daily.
Do any members here use an inhaler and has BPH?

I don't know about the BPH connection but Breztri Aerosphere Inhaler works good, combined with Dupixent, a biologic that moderates abnormal Inteleukin activity if any part of your lung disease may be related to immune system malfunction. The beauty of the latter is that it's not an immune system suppressant, it's a targeted moderator involved in certain lung diseases, as I understand it (which doesn't count for much in this case). But it might be worth bringing up with your Pulmonologist. Also get checked for any genetic reasons for your lung disease, there are some that can cause real problems that can be otherwise controlled. If y9ou're using your family doctor to treat your lung disease you're making a mistake. And if your Pulmonologist isn't getting the job done, get a better one. Don't ask me how I know.

And don't mess around with copd, there are different kinds, and I believe they are all progressive and more or less permanent. The sooner you treat it the better off you will be long term, since you can't buy those years back.

A great reply. I needed this . I have put off using Spiriva because of the enlarged Prostate. My urologist said it’s worth a try so no started it today . I like the pulmonologist but au have to see her PA most of the time because she’s booked until March for follow up visits. I’m not thrilled about that . I asked my primary care guy to refer me to a different Pulmonologist. I’m praying he will without a hassle. No pulmonologist around here takes new patients without a referral. Thank you again for the info . If you have more to share , I’d appreciate any tidbit of info.

I was diagnosed with COPD during a workup for my open heart surgery. Never had needed any treatment for it. Because getting out for a nice long walk is a habit I've had since 2015. Do your research and you will find mention that the best therapy for COPD is light exercise daily. Doctors won't tell you this because they are intent on making money from your "condition".

Great point. I have read a lot but more to do. I’m having a hard time with O2 level dropping to 88 every time I walk around the house.

Ok yes, I forgot one more thing. If you're in a dusty environment or a high pollen count day, wear a 3M N95 mask of your choice that is comfortable. You'll be amazed with the decrease of symptoms that will work way beyond better than depending on you meds to counteract dirty air. I use both, always have mask in my car if I'm driving thru a construction zone, or walking to the store if the air is dirty, or working outdoors on a bad air day, or mowing the lawn, shoveling mulch, etc. The KEY is that the meds help you live longer, but no amount of meds will prevent dirty air from accelerating the cumulative damage you already have. Don't forget that, it's important. Buy a pack of 20 or so in a box, when they get a little dirty or start to stink, pitch it, get a new one. VERY cheap way to live longer and live better.

This, and please consider doing some research on nebulizing DMSO. From what I have found, it got the same media treatment as ivermectin did as a COVID remedy.

Albuterol is probably one of the most common inhalers, my daughter and I both use it as a rescue inhaler, it's simple, you can carry it in your pocket and effective, I have zero side effects from it.

There is also Trelegy Ellipta you can use it when you need a stronger hit than Albuterol, there are others such as Breo that are similar. I have Trelegy that I use when it gets into my chest heavily, the only symptoms I have is it tends to bother my vocal cords and my voice gets a bit raspy after a few days of use.

Your doctor will probably prescribe Albuterol as a rescue inhaler and one of the others like Trelegy.

I had a doctor tell me I had COPD, put me on Spireva. Couple of months I got an appointment with a Pulmonary Doc. He did the full workup. Told me my lungs were like the lungs of a 60 year that never smoked, i was 65 at the time. Quit Sireva immediately and got a new family physician.

Amazing story of ineptitude on the part of your doctor . I was told a year ago my my Primary Care Doctor that I had COPD . I knew I had lung damage from Covid from testing in lungs during my Covid infection more than three years ago. I went to a pulmonologist who prescribed Spiriva after testing me for Alpha1 and fungus. I put off using Spiriva due to the BPH and it can cause dementia with long term use. (Antichlorinergic). I felt I was doing fine other than cough and mucous all day.
This past week my Oxygen drops if I move around just a little. Until lately I hit the Y three times a week for 30 minutes aerobics then weight machines . Now can hardly walk through the house without getting winded.
Can’t see my pulmonologist for months!?!? She will sometimes message me but so what?? Went to urgent care and he put me in antibiotic. Maybe my cough and mucous is a little better . I started with the Spiriva three days ago hoping to get relief. Maybe I should ask for albuterol and something like inhaled cortisone and salmeterol. I read they don’t cause urinary retention.
It’s bad when the doctors know way less than a gun board forum. I’m thankful for you guys. It also helps to know I’m not alone .
