Leather sofa cracking, any suggestions on how to fix?
Does anyone have experience reconditioning leather? Sofa is cracking and may be too far gone at this point. Any suggestions?

Nothing will fix those existing cracks. But if you put Lexol leather conditioner on the rest of the couch, it will help new ones from forming. I put a healthy coat on, then do it again a few days later and then periodically after that.

Lexol and Bick 4 are both great conditioners. Just be warned that Lexol can darken some leathers, Bick 4 will not.

If you don’t mind me asking what brand is that couch? My wife and I are looking for some new leather living room furniture and would prefer to find some USA made. Thanks.

^^^^^^ You will probably have to go Custom Order.

Locally have we an enormous furniture store that floor stocks the usual imported crap. However they have a custom order department, you meet with them, they have the ability to show you sample materials, etc. My niece just recently did this, I think it took 6 to 8 weeks to receive its once it’s ordered.

IIRC most of it came from North Carolina, where there are still quality shops that can deliver quality.

It is quality stuff and the price reflects it. Mucho Deniro!

You will probably have to call around in your area to locate this.

Good luck to you.

Once it is cracked...you have to dye it.

Conditioner will help prevent other cracks and worsening.

The type of leather matters a lot. Anything bonded, will eventually crack and flake. No about of conditioning will prevent it. The fabric underneath cannot be dyed to match. You can re-bond new material in place and then dye to match.

I've been unable to find any real leather couches within several hundred miles, even attempting custom orders.

Flexsteel offers genuine leather on some of their upper tier couches. Both of mine are real leather. But they were $2500+ apiece a few years back, so would probably run closer to $3000-$3500 each today.

You'll just need to look closely at the specs for each of their models, as only some are genuine leather, while other cheaper models use bonded leather and/or vinyl.

My current set was in that price range...for bonded. Some of the particle board has already broken in them also. It was the most expensive set in the store, the only one we had access to.

I'll definitely look harder next time. We were in a pinch, and couldn't wait more than a couple weeks for the furniture.

My old leather sofa started cracking and peeling just after a year, which was disappointing. It just couldn't handle how much we used it every day. So, I decided leather wasn't the right fit for us and started looking for something that would last longer and suit our needs better. I found this excellent website where you could pick out your sofa design. I went with a lounge comfy L-shaped sectional sofa. I chose a tough fabric that can take a lot of use, added some solid wood legs, and ensured it was the right size for our living room.

It's been more than a year with this custom sectionals sofa, and it's still holding up outstandingly—no issues like the leather one.

That wasn't real leather. Sounds like synthetic/bonded leather. Real leather doesn't crack after 1 year, and it never peels.

It's like the difference between particleboard and hardwood. Both are sold as "wood", but one is artificially made, cheaper, and much less durable compared to the real thing.

It takes years/decades of neglect for real leather to wear out. And you can avoid that with some basic cleaning and conditioning a few times a year.
