LS1 GTOLike it or hate it, they're sticking with the recent past.
Means CVN 84 should the Obama and CVN 85 the USS Trump.
CVN 86 will the Mr. Potato Head - with Hasbro providing the mascot giveaway toys.

PowerSurgeSad. Especially for someone who once said he loathes the military.

Here's a dream - the Ford Class is replaced with the new Trump Class at CVN 85 then the USS Biden will still be a Trump Class carrier.

I don’t think every president is represented by a naval vessel let alone a carrier. Why start that now?

fischtown7Do we really want a ship that will be associated with the term "going down", will have to rename the bathrooms too no longer refer to them as
" gotta go to the head"

They've been doing it for the last 25 years or so though. It probably won't change until either a President requests they stop or something happens that makes them go off in another direction. I can't think of what that might be though.

Longer than that. They started naming carriers after presidents in 1945 with the Midway class CV named after Franklin Roosevelt.
The practice then really picked up starting in 1970 with the Nimitz class CVNs:
Eisenhower
Roosevelt
Lincoln
Washington
Truman
Reagan
H.W. Bush
And they continued that tradition with the new Ford class CVNs:
Ford
Kennedy
Clinton
W. Bush
To be presumably followed in short order by Obama, Trump, and Biden.
Two other post-WW2 presidents have non-carrier ships named after them:
Johnson (Zumwalt-class destroyer)
Carter (Seawolf-class submarine)
Leaving only Nixon with no ships that bear his name.
Of the 45 US presidents, only 19 have not had naval vessels named after them. And out of those, 3 (Obama/Biden/Trump) are basically guaranteed to get theirs, leaving only 16 of the more obscure presidents left out. (Well, 15 obscure and 1 scandal-ridden early resigner).

hberttmankIt is disgusting to me that they would name US Navy ships after scum like slick willie, obummer and fucking biden. These men were no friends to the military.

We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." corsairThe naming conventions that the past handful of SECNAV's have continued with has been a hot mess.
If they're going to be named after Presidents, than at least they could've at least worn the uniform in a prior career. At least Doris Miller wore the uniform with distinction however being amongst a number of presidents, reinforces the disgrace that the naming was purely political pandering. Clinton disliked the military, he found them a necessary nuisance, the high-point of his interaction with the military was the Somalia/Blackhawk Down episode and getting involved with the Balkan Wars. GW Bush...too soon, let him pass then revisit the idea of honorariums.
Considering the looming fight in the Pacific, it'd be highly appropriate to name our next carriers, Lexington, Yorktown, Ranger, Hornet, etc....

RightwireI'd think Clinton, Obama, and Biden would be better applied to garbage scows.

2000Z-71Does this mean that Tailhook is coming back?
I'd like to see some naval tradition carried on with names like Kitty Hawk, Hornet, Midway and Yorktown being revived for carriers.

Captain MorganWe should stop honoring politicians and start naming ships after MOH recipients. They are the ones that should be remembered.

Sig2340Guys, we may be missing the point.
If the practice of naming each new CVN after the Presidents (in sequence), the US Navy gets
TWO carriers named for President Trump!
CVN 45 and CVN 47.
