Firearms insurance
Who do you guys use to insure your guns?

I got a quote from state farm for 540ish a year. Seems a little high to me and I don't like the idea of them keeping pictures and serial numbers.

I buy and sell a lot. Seems like a huge pain to keep things current with state farm.

I've been comparing companies myself, and this seems to be the one that's most recommended. I was going to start a thread asking the same thing, but I'll watch this one.

If State Farm has your homeowners insurance you can up your coverage specifically to firearms for a fairly low premium. Ask your agent.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

This is what I did. Extra rider for a certain amount. They don’t have pictures or serial numbers but I do.

Actually I have a lot more since I got the insurance so I probably need to up it.

Ask your state farm agent. Come on they NEED the pic and serial numbers to verify what firearms you have. Who is to say you do not have forty unfired Colt Pythons.

Some don’t insure, but store where easy theft is impossible.

Ft Knox, Liberty, AmSec, all make residential storage containers.

I had a hard time getting any answers and then additional firearms coverage from my previous homeowners group, which I've since moved on from. But I carry a 3rd party that seemed reasonable, somethink like $200/yr for $25k. Didnt need to send in any specifics like serial numbers. Once you go over a dollar amount, they did require some additional info, I just forget what that was.

My State Farm policy only offers a relatively low firearms rider that will only cover up to $5000 total.

Coverage past that requires separate additional personal articles coverage with an itemized list and appraisal.

Nothing is impossible.

I already have an AmSec safe and a sprinkler system in the safe room.

I have a little over 70 guns. It's irresponsible not to protect the investment.

Collectors insurance doesn't require serials or photos.

They don't require it up front. You still have to have a means to prove your loss, preferably with photos/videos and detailed descriptions and serial numbers, which you stored in a separate place (like cloud storage).

You can't just say "I lost 40x full auto MGs to a break-in, please cut me a check for $2 million."

I got it about 15 years ago so my memory is hazy but my way of thinking is this: if something happens to them in my house it is covered by home insurance. If it happens to them in my car it is covered by car insurance. If it happens to them outside of those then this policy kicks in. There are times when I have a high $ amount of firearms outside of my house or car, but not that often.

I’m sure the devil is in the details.

Collectors is easy and good to work with. I’ve had policies with them in the past. I actually need to renew. Eek

At one point I thought that way, too, but then I started looking into the details and realized that my State Farm homeowners policy covers basically nothing so far as gun are concerned. Maybe enough to replace a single handgun and shotgun if the house burns down (IIRC it was like a $1000 or $1500 limit). That may be enough for the casual gun owners who just want "a gun in the house for protection", but for most of us here that ain't gonna cut it.

I called them up to see what my options were. The highest they'd go for a rider was $5000 in basic fire/theft coverage without doing the full-on photograph and documentation deal. The $5000 rider was reasonably inexpensive. The other type of coverage was absolutely insane, and included coverage for incidental damage and other stuff I'm not worried about.

I got the rider because it was reasonable and I figured it was better than nothing. But $5k isn't going to come anywhere near making me whole in the event of catastrophic loss, and my collection pales in comparison to that of many here.

I don't understand why they won't offer higher coverage limits for catastrophic loss. All I'm looking for is replacement in the event of a house fire or if somebody breaks in while I'm on vacation and cleans me out. I don't have anything super fancy, and I'm not worried about collector value or that sort of stuff. I'd happily pay a proportional rate to increase that $5k rider to the amount of coverage that I actually need, but State Farm says they can't do it.

The other consideration is that they'd probably try to weasel their way out of paying if I ever did have a claim anyway. I've never made a homeowners or auto claim, but I have to fight my health insurance pretty much every time so I don't imagine they'd be much different. Insurance is basically a scam.
