Lots of good advice: whatever is purchased will certainly be used. Whether it’s a hand gun, or long range rifle many hours will be spent with the boy learning and enjoying time together with it.

Lots of good suggestions already listed. I’ve been thinking similarly and am leaning toward a Colt Python. Have always wanted one - should fit in your budget should you be inclined.

This absolutely

I have my great great grandfather’s Winchester 25-35 in my safe for this absolute reason. There is no resale monetary value to it as the barrel is shot Out. Howeve, to me, it’s a priceless piece because there are many aspects that make it dear to me

Heirloom has a family history imo

I agree with the sentimental aspect of an heirloom piece. For myself I own several guns that were passed down through the family. One of those is a 30-40 Krag from my grandfather. Another is my first deer rifle given to me by my father. I tried to give each of my boys something similar, and I hope to give my grandchildren each a memorable gun. I'm thinking along the lines of their first 22 on the day that we can take them to a class like Project Appleseed.

Something on the level of a Nighthawk T3 like other guns but Over the Top.

What about an M-1 Garand? They are still fairly reasonable in price and certainly have the history.

Before WWII my mother worked for RockOla making juke boxes. Went the war started they started making Carbines so Mom switched from music boxes to guns. I have one of her Carbines in almost as new condition. My FIL gave me his Winchester M-1 rifle. My point is my grandsons are not interested. My granddaughter is! As a matter of fact is is named after her.
