My initial TimeShare unit was located just outside Tyler. I enjoyed my trips there. There is a beautiful rose garden there. Shooting opportunities are limited, however. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

My brother retired in Granbury Tx. and I would retire there but for him! A gun in the hand is worth more than ten policemen on the phone. The American Revolution was carried out by a group of gun toting religious zealots.

We just bought a place on the airstrip at Holly Lake Ranch, north of Tyler. Giant pine trees, stars at night. Many, many DFW people are retiring there. The property taxes are half what we pay in McKinney now. Google it.

Okay, thanks everyone for posting. I think I got enough names to collate on a list and check out. In anyone else has a different idea, feel free to pipe in and I'll catch it. But I won't be responding anymore to this thread so as not to bump it. I figure if the right answer isn't in the first 5 pages or sooner, then this isn't SigForum. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I do not recommend the Austin-San Antonio-Fredricksburg triangle. Its spendy and more so by the day. Maybe Marble Falls, Johnson City, Luling, Elgin, La Grange, Giddings, Brenham, or Killeen in the Central area. My aunt lives in Nacogdoches and its a pleasant town to visit. I think that the corridor from Bryan-College Station to Nacogdoches is your best bet for the greenery and least heat. There is a reason that General Sherman said 'If the devil gave me Hell and Texas, I'd live in Hell and rent out Texas'. The northeast quadrant is the least hellish. Big Spring, the crossroads of West Texas, meets most of your criteria. There is sometimes snow (but not much) and there are some tornadoes, but we loved living there.

I have lived in TX for over 60 yrs. North Texas (Dallas area), Central TX (Waco), and now in Kingwood (far northeastern suburb of Houston. In spite of the conventional widom concerning humidity, we think this climate beats the others. Dallas' temp is higher in the summer and much colder in the winter. Also, more violent summer storms. Waco area is stifling in the summer and a hot, dusty wind howls day and night. Kingwood is a mid-to-upper middle class neighborhood fairly remote from Houston. It is as quiet and peaceful as one can find in today's America. It's also a beautiful and heavily wooded community. We are retired and moved here to be close to our grandkids as they grew up. There are several hospitals within 7 minutes of our home, some good local restaurants and 2 large H.EB. grocery stores and a Krogers close by. VERY crime free. Some neighborhoods closest to the San Jacinto river flooded during Harvey, so one should keep that in mind. Our neighborhood has never flooded and Kingwood, in general is far enough from the coast that hurricane winds have not been a problem. You don't have to live "off-the-grid" for a relaxed life style. As we get older, convenience becomes a thing.

“Killeen is a shithole” Quoted by my realtor when we moved here. Also by my new neighbor Billy and his wife who moved out of Killeen into Temple to get away from the shootings, robberies and what not....what he and she tell me is that it’s just like the hood I used to work in-but with the occasional Army guy everywhere you go.... Sorry if others have already picked this, but from the list of criteria, I'd pick San Angelo. San Angelo is another up and coming city in Texas. I've driven through it many times, only stopping there for food and gas, and I had business there once. It wouldn't be a city for everyone because it is relatively out in the middle of nowhere, but many people like that about it - there's no interstate running through it. Retired Texas Lawman
