About having guns on base, from my experience, personnel living in base housing, NOT the barracks, are permitted firearms in their base housing.

Just because nobody asked does not make it legal. Just means you got away with it.

OK.

If you're goin' through hell, keep on going.
Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it.
You might get out before the devil even knows you're there.

Canada gun story.
I was spending the night in Beaver Creek,Yukon. This is where Canadian Customs is. About 10 PM a guy bangs on the door demanding to know I was an American? Turns out he was busted by customs. I spoke with the customs agent and agreed to pick up the gun and delivered it to an FFL just over the border. The backstory is Canadian customs is very good at catching Americans with guns. This guy got caught, was told to go back and leave the gun at the FFL, then return. Either they know how long that it takes or they have the FFL call. The big problem is people would remember the gun, not want to go back, and decide to toss the gun into the woods. The local kids knew the common spots used and would do regular searches.
