Why make this harder than it needs to be ? The price difference from one company to the other is probably not enough to worry about.

I had a similar situation. I called around and explained to people that I wasn't in a hurry, didn't care what time it got towed, and could live with it happening anytime in the next week. Found a guy that would do it over in the morning when he wasn't busy for 75. That's less than half what's being charged in my area!

This, no deadline, no emergency get it when they have a free truck.

Why not just find one that has the best, or least bad, reviews and call them?
Explain your situation, maybe they can fit it into a return trip from a more urgent(and higher paying) job and be happy to not have an empty truck.

"Are all tow companies POS?"

No they aren't, but the ones that are seem to take it to an art form.

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to business lately:

So many people think that companies all sitting around, doing nothing, waiting for the phone to ring so that they can leap into action. I get those phone calls all day long, and they seem surprised when they find out they may need to wait a week or two for us to get to them.

Callers seem to think that entire office staff exist ready to issue a quote or respond to an e-mail. You know why my already high prices aren't higher? I don't have office staff. Neither do a lot of tow operators. The calls forward to a mobile number that they answer while out towing.

People with "simple" jobs seem to think they're a lot easier than they actually are. To ensure there is a proper understanding of the job, and that the necessary equipment is present, I usually make a phone call to ask a bunch of questions. It's a lot faster than emailing back and forth.

Everybody who's in a hurry (most), should understand that the more time the business operator spends dealing with customers in a hurry, the less time they have to service those customers, thus creating additional delays which further frustrate the frantic customers that expect everything "right now".

"You can do it when you're slow if I get a discount". I'm never slow, therefore there are no slow time discounts.

I guess I was lucky. Bought a non-running used truck and my AAA+ towed it 88 miles to my mechanic.
