I believe we've been down this road before, but I can't find it. Any real world experiences with using a solar trickle charger (no power to the garage) to keep a car battery charged? This would be to keep a new vehicle battery charged during a 30 day deployment so as to not lose all the electronics. [Mrs. M-11 has real trouble backing my car out of the narrow garage and down the alley to the street without "removing" the mirrors. Don't ask.]

I would look for one that has some built-in electronics that will shut off the flow if needed....

I run a 50 Watt panel on the roof, down to a little solar generator I made with solar controller. It in turn has an SAE jack that I just plug the battery into. The vehicle battery has an SAE lead on it. Plug and play as needed.
Works great.

Too bad about the Photobucket blur. This was before they started charging...

VW used to ship them on all cars coming from Me hi co. They sat in the windshield and plugged into the cigarette lighter. It requires an always hot lighter circuit. They work just fine. The only problem is the service dept guys steal them as soon as the cars arrive. Bastards. They leave them in place until they service the cars and move them up to sell. Except if you buy a car and ask for the charger. No sweat for the sales staff. Then the service dept had to scramble to find just one.

Thanks, gents. It's not a hot plug, so I'll use the OBDII socket.

Battery Tender makes an in line regulator that fits from the solar panel to the connection. Used one at the range to keep the tractor battery from over charging.

I had one, courtesy of a suburban Philly VW dealer back in the '90's. It worked great on my motorcycles, until some bastard stole it. In fact, I've lost three solar chargers thru theft.

I'm using a Harbor Freight Solar charger now. Puts out 22 volts DC in direct sunlight at about a quarter amp. Just enough to keep a motorcycle battery fully charged.
