Suggestions for a tow hitch (non-equalizer) Login/Join

I already have an Equalizer hitch for our travel trailer but I’m in need of a standard hitch to tow my daughter’s dead Honda Pilot home from college (total distance one way is around 100 miles). My tow vehicle is a 2024 GMC AT4 Sierra HD 3500.

Any suggestions for an adjustable hitch? I’ve been looking at something like what I’ve linked to below. I don’t really need something this fancy but I do need an adjustable (factory lift on my truck) class 4 hitch. Thoughts? I do need it before next weekend too.

THANKS!

May I recommend contacting the people at eTrailer . Their support is way good.

I've used Curt products before, for what it's worth.

Had one of these “tow and stow” for over 10 years. No issues.

Unfortunately no. I had her take it to a mechanic that was highly recommended. He said the repairs would cost almost as much as the vehicle is worth and he wouldn’t waste any money on it because it will need a new timing belt and water pump shortly too. He also advised against driving in on the freeway and said donate it or trade it in. And this all assumes the emissions aren’t screwed up now too. On top of all this, it needs new tires (driving on snow tires right now).

He also didn’t charge me a dime to check it out and then talk to me about options.

Thanks for the suggestions too.

There are lots of good choices, but your issue is going to be finding/getting one in the time you have. Me personally I'd prefer one from someone that is a known name like Curt as suggested above than Walmart, but likely delivery on time will be a real challange. And frankly its not that big of a load (?4500 for car and 2000 for trailer?). If its rated for it I wouldn't have serious issues with any of them.

Why not rent a car dolly from U-haul?

Would need to know if the Pilot is AWD or not. If AWD, then a trailer would be a better idea.

Are you putting a RV tow bar on the front, or just towing with a strap, or ???

I was assuming we are putting it on a trailier. otherwise why would you need a hitch?

U-Haul car trailer as it is AWD. It’s only $54 to get it home.

Since there was no mention of a trailer, I’m not sure how it’s going to be towed; why I asked.

I’m kind of at a loss here. I live in a fairly out of the way place for trailering equipment, and there are probably a dozen places I can think of in Anchorage. That doesn’t include places like Costco and Walmart, and we don’t have Tractor Supply or Harbor Freight.

BB61, if there is already a weight distributing hitch available, why can’t it be used?

What makes this drop hitch you’re looking for so special? No one between where you are and where the Pilot is sells hitches?

Plus, U-Haul sells hitches.

Use the one you have, just don't use the bars.

Adjustable is always good. I'm a believer in getting the most robust equipment possible and underutilizing it as opposed to trying to save money and running something at its limits.

I use a similar Bulletproof hitch rated at 30,000 pounds on a 2" receiver, and while 20,000 is the most I'd ever have on it, is probably way overkill for anything you'd ever need a hitch for. Consruction wise, it's very similar to the first hitch you linked.

My receiver is a Curt, and I have several Curt and Reese hitches (typically purchased as needed from farm supply stores). Your big chain hardware stores also typically have a towing section.

I would gladly suggest Curt, Reese, B&W for anything. But I get the idea the OP is doing this once and on short notice (otherwise he would already own the needed hitch and might per question above). For 100 miles with a light load anything you can find that has the required rating will be fine and there is no need to spend big money if the intended use is 'one time'.

Given this, why not donate or sell as junk where it's at? Not trying to be insulting; just making sure the thought clicked.

It’s a fair point. I contacted the local Honda dealer to see what they say. It does run, for now, so my daughter is thinking of driving it to work, a mile away from home, and when the time comes (stops running) donate it. She is saving for a new used car so this will hopefully give her a month or two more to save.

I bought a B&W model designed for a GMC multipro tailgate. Thanks for the advice, if the dealer offers enough, I’ll return it. If not, I’ve got a long term hitch.
