Any value for old typewriters
While purging my house of unwanted junk I came across an old Olympia typewriter and was wondering if there's any collectors market for old typewriters? I know people collect all sorts of stuff so before I throw it away I want to be sure its not worth any money

Perhaps. If it is clean and good working order. You could always put it on Ebay.

Yes. There is a market. You won't get rich, but they do sell. Look at eBay, and there are typewriter sites, too. As always, condition is everything.

Tom Hanks is a collector of typewriters.

By God – I have an old Olympia portable (with carry case) that I bought in 1956. Made in W. Germany, it’s a beautiful piece of junk.

I doubt that it would bring enough to justify the hassle of selling it.

Serious about crackers.

As people get older, their writing goes to hell and they can use a typewriter to fill out their checks to pay bills.

I would list it on Craigslist.

Who fills out paper checks and mails paper bills any more. It's more likely old people will figure out the internet and use on-line banking.

I still have 2 office leases that require a paper check. 1 of my regular 7 bank clients still pays with a paper check every time. About 1/2 of my private clients pay with a paper check when told we don't accept credit cards. I myself have 1 regular personal bill that I can only pay with a paper check.

I donated an electronic typewriter that uses ink cartridges a while back but I won't get rid of my Olympia Deluxe. Cool

I have payees who need to get paper checks. I still pay them through the online bill pay. The bank sends them a check. If I get paper checks, I deposit them by scanning them in on my phone.

I see typewriters from time to time in antique shops, typically in the $50-$75 range. No idea if they work or not. Can you find ribbons these days?

Really old typewriters didn't have a key for the numerals 0 and 1 or exclamation point. To type a 0 or 1, you hit the capital O and the small l, respectively. For an exclamation point, you typed a period, backspaced and typed an apostrophe over it. Big Grin

Old typewriters are cool. I've got several. This one is a 1964 Royal sitting down in my basement.

I would love love love to have an IBM Selectric II, but I don't know if there is any way to get them serviced and repaired nowadays, or if ribbon availability is a problem.

I think my parents still have the old Selectric IBM typewriter I used to type out my book reports on. God I used a lot of White Out using that thing....

IBM Selectrics are still used by businesses that require forms with multiple sheets/carbon paper in between. Keeps everything neat and legible.

If they're only selling for 50 bucks or so it's not worth my time trying to sell it. I was hoping maybe it would be worth a couple hundred bucks.

My on-line bill payer bank (USAA) will post a paper check if the payee does not accept an ACH. I sent one of these to myself just to see what it looked like, and it resembles very closely something you'd tear out of a checkbook. I'd be surprised if other banks didn't do something similar.

Look them up on eBay. Many models sell for well over $50. Google for typewriter collector sites. This information is readily available - it won't take you five minutes to find it.

There are '50s, '60s, and '70s Olympias on eBay ranging from $50 to $900. They seem clustered arounf $300 to $500 for good condition, working machines.

Artists love reusing the old round style typewriter keys.

This style might have value for that purpose.
