Hotel Recommendations - Washington DC Login/Join

Hi All. Heading to DC with my family for a few days and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good hotel. Traveling with wife and two kids, ages 6 and 8. Primarily looking for a place that is in a safe area and close to subway. Thanks.

There are several and depends what you are looking for.

I preferred to stay at the Courtyard Capitol Hill\Navy Yard at 140 L Street cause it was walking distance to my office. The subway is nearby.

Also, the hotels in Crystal City are fine, it’s just a distance to DC proper.

We stayed just south of the mall, within a few blocks and we walked everywhere. Got a taxi once when it was raining. It was much cheaper than the hotels to the north of the mall.

This was back about eight years ago, dunno if it helps.

I just looked it up and it was the residence inn at east st SW.

I live in the Virginia suburbs of D.C., but on occasion I've needed to stay in town. I like the Washington Plaza Hotel, 10 Thomas Circle, NW., Washington, DC. It's a four minute walk to Metro (subway). It's in the realm of "old school" hotels, and yet quite affordable. I like it because it's NOT a chain hotel (that may not appeal to you). There is dining in-house, and you can actually walk a few blocks to the White House.

I'm surprised that nobody is recommending the Trump hotel!

Henley Park. It is very quiet and clean. Restaurant was very good. It is walking distance to the mall. We had two long stays there and were never disappointed.
It was built in 1918 and is on the Historic Hotel Registry.

There is also a Marriott and a Residence Inn at the Roslynn stop. I was a long time guest at that Marriott. The Marriott between Dupont cir and Washington cir is nice too.

Crystal City Marriott. Trust me on this.

I stayed there in October and have stayed there several t8mes before. You can park your car in the underground lot and use the metro to/from DC for as long as you’re there.

Elevators take you down to the underground mall with shops and stores and restaurants. Small compared to mega malls but very convenient. Take the escalator down in the mall to the metro station. Your one metro stop from the pentagon and 2-3 stops from the metro stop by the air and space museum on the yellow line if I recall correctly.

In DC, look at the hotels around the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan Metro Station. It's close to the zoo too.

If it's not important that you're in DC, then near any metro stop in VA would be fine.

In MD, anything on the western part of the Red Line going towards Shady Grove. Also Silver Spring on the eastern part of Red Line would probably be fine.

I live in the area, so if you have specific questions my email is in my profile.

How about Airbnb? First time I went to DC I stayed in Bethesda. When I go again this summer I booked an Airbnb for $50/night.

Are you visiting the DC mall?

I like the Country Inn Camp Springs. Nothing fancy but extremely affordable, clean, beds sleep well. Quick access to the interstate.

It's a 20min drive to Union station parking deck, where 24hr parking is $20. No need to ride the metro if you're going visit the mall.

Walk through the station and use the Big Bus Tours hop-on/off to get around DC. Buy the tour passes on Groupon or the like to Save a ton.

We stayed here several years ago and enjoyed it. Had a good full breakfast restaurant and there are numerous restaurants around. You can walk to the mall, but is a little of a hike, but just catch the bus. The subway station is about a block away.

Thank you all again for your suggestions. We really weren't sure what we were looking for at first, but in the process of checking out all of these hotels and their locations and amenities, we were able to narrow it down. We decided on the below.

Holiday Inn : Washington-Capitol
550 C Street S.W., Washington, District of Columbia 20024

Our son lives in Rosslyn, VA and we stay often at the Courtyards by Marriott there in Rosslyn. Depending on if the government is in session, the rates can vary a lot. But it is clean, staff is friendly, in a convenient, safe area close to restaurants and an easy walk to the metro, and pretty easy walk to Key Bridge and Georgetown.
