U.S. Special Operations forces carried out what the Pentagon called a “successful” counterterrorism mission in northwest Syria early Thursday. The risky commando assault targeted someone believed to be a senior jihadist leader, but rescue workers said women and children were among at least 13 people killed during the raid.

A senior Iraqi intelligence official said the target of the raid was the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, but U.S. officials did not confirm that and have not said who the target was.

The helicopter-borne commando assault resembled the raid in October 2019 that culminated in the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the previous leader of the Islamic State. That raid took place not far from the one on Thursday.

The White House released a statement from President Biden, who described the raid as a “counterterrorism operation to protect the American people and our Allies, and make the world a safer place.”

Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, the current leader of ISIS, was “taken off the battlefield” in the operation, Mr. Biden said, confirming that all U.S. forces who took part had returned safely. The president said he would address the American people later on Thursday about the raid. His statement made no mention of the reported civilian casualties.

Sounds like Joey and crew were trying to move the media and the public away from their never ending string of failures and onto something new ahead of a disastrous job's report on Friday, when surprise, Joey and his cast of morons F'd up again.

If they knew where he was, and had no intention of capturing him nor mitigating collateral damage, why the helicopter approach? (lot's of unanswered question obviously)

Of course they said that.
I'm guessing the "rescue workers" were closely aligned with the target, philosophically. Also, they're known to employ mega-exaggeritis in any such incident. Even if it's true, these cowards bear the responsibility themselves for being terrorists hiding among women & children.

The story is the ISIS dude detonated a suicide vest.

Maybe the intention was to capture him but it didn't work out.

Also it is being said there was a two-hour gunfight around that compound so it was not exactly a quick surgical snatch and grab.

Based on the information being provided, the raid did not go perfectly but still went well enough.

I agree if it was only a hit mission, the compound could have been taken out without risking American lives.

Thank God for our military forces that still operate effectively with this fool temporarily in charge.
He is about to make a speech, no doubt to imply if not state, that he gets credit in some way along with all the other stuffed shirts.
I promise you, they did this without his support. At best he offered no interference.

Based on the news reports, much of the two hours was spent trying to get nearby civilians out of the way to limit casualties.

Interestingly, just like the Bin Laden raid, one helicopter reportedly suffered a mechanical issue and had to be blown up.

From https://www.nwahomepage.com/ne...-of-isis-biden-says/ :

Helicopters are notoriously unreliable, not surprised...especially when parts and retention of experienced personal are hard to come-by these days.

Before reading too deeply in the these initial articles, I'd wait awhile before picking it apart. Information about such missions are notoriously inaccurate, particularly when there's a political angle at-work, eager to 'get out in front of it' mind-set.

It was only partly successful is my guess. If he did blow hisself up the evidence was destroyed. I am also guessing that is why we went in to kill him and get the "treasure trove." Which obviously was compromised a great deal. Only mho.

I want to know if the commandos were chosen for their racial, ethnic, religious, gender and sexual diversity.

Those things are important in a raid like this according to the Pentagon.

I don’t know what’s being implied by some of the posts here, but when I was in the Army I served under good presidents and bad presidents. In both situations I did my duty and fulfilled my oath of office to the best of my ability. I would not accuse any currently serving member of the armed forces of anything less without strong supporting evidence—and especially not merely because I didn’t like the guy at the top of the chain.

Now I know why I have always lost women to guys like you. I mean, it's not just the uniform. It's the stories that you tell. So much fun and imagination.
