Fires, flooding, killer mudslides, and now Tsunami. It's been a rough couple of months in these parts.

USGS apparently revised this to a 7.9 on the Richter Scale. Still potentially a pretty bad deal for Tsunami.

9:31:41 UTC equals 1:31:41 AM Pacific. According to the map above, I guess that means the tsunami hits my area between 4 and 5 AM.

I found what you said riveting.

They're now saying a wave would hit the Bay Area about 6:15 am local. A buoy did register a 32 foot displacement near the epicenter.

Not sure which to believe (I'm 2 blocks from the Bay):

San Francisco Department of Emergency Management has tweeted that people within three blocks of the coast or five blocks of the San Francisco Bay should be prepared to evacuate.

The NWS Tsunami Warning Center has cancelled the Tsunami Watch for California. A Tsunami was generated by this event, but does not pose a threat to California. Some areas may see small sea level changes.

Believe the people who aren't panicking. In this case, panicking would include announcing that people within three blocks of the coast or five blocks of the San Francisco Bay should be prepared to evacuate.

The truth is oftimes so boring and un-dramatic, no? Yes, many times, the truth does not allow for people to shift into their self-perceived "hero" mode and say bold shit in bold ways, declaring one's self so fucking brave.

Given the history (circa 1964) in AK I can see them reacting quick fast and in a hurry. I think the folks in CA could take a chill pill for just a bit and see what the actual results are more than 15 minutes after the quake.

Interesting that bendy's map shows that there were 6 at 5.0 or greater in same area leading up to this. And on the broader view of all quakes in past two weeks, that looks like a bad place to settle!

At least (with any luck) there shouldn't be any lawsuits over the tsunami. Yikes, between electric utilities and water companies' backup generators it hasn't been pretty.

I got no text alert, either. I just happened to be up when I saw it as a regular news item. That's a little concerning.

Glad everyone's OK. We're still supposed to stay away from coastal shorelines for 12 hours.

EDIT: Just read that if it's just a "watch", it would not generate text alerts. When alerts go out, the sirens sound and the Emergency Alert System would activate.

I was in San Francisco about 4 blocks from the Great Highway during a tsunami warning in the late 80s.

There was no wind and it was very quiet. But there were people in the beach. We were inside the house for all the good that will do us but going out to the beach???

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
