Found this in an old newspaper.

Well, not that old but read these in today's context.

Nope: http://www.abrahamlincolnonlin.../speeches/cannot.htm
quote:
These sentiments were created by the Rev. William J. H. Boetcker, who lectured around the United States about industrial relations at the turn of the twentieth century. There is no evidence linking them to Lincoln as the author.

At one time President Ronald Reagan used them in a speech, wrongly attributing them to Lincoln. Those who are familiar with Lincoln's writings recognize that these statements do not reflect Lincoln's "voice," nor can they be found in any authentic Lincoln literature

You mean I can't trust the local newspaper? The one often referred as the "Register Garbage"
I wasn't sure so I wrote "apparently".

The bigger point was to read in todays context.

You have to research such things before you post them.

Is the problem the Lincoln implication, or the sayings themselves?

The problem is that you attributed these sayings to Lincoln, when the briefest of research showed clearly that Lincoln did not say these things. It was very easy to find that this is a misattribution. I merely plugged one of the sayings on the page you posted into a search engine:

Right there at the top of the page, you see the answer: https://search.brave.com/searc...+destroying+the+rich

Also, I pointed you to a thread I created in February, outlining this type of thing and my feelings about them appearing in this forum: Misattributed quotes on the pages of SIGforum

I'm not sure how I can be any clearer. When you attribute a quote or quotes to a specific person, you should first do a bit of research to be certain that your attribution is accurate, and if you have any doubt as to to the accuracy, you should either refrain from posting it, or you should post it and add that you're not certain who said it or wrote it.

The internet is awash in falsehoods and it is my fervent desire that we avoid these types of things. In this forum, we should strive to get it right. I cannot stress it enough to you how very important it is to me that we avoid this type of thing.

I did plug one saying into google search and came up blank. So I depended on the local paper's implication

Sorry.

It was a good opportunity to refresh this with the membership.

If you wish to discuss the concepts put forth by the right Reverend William J. H. Boetcker, feel free to start a new thread, omitting the Lincoln reference.
