The GF's mom is 97YO and still lives by herself in her house. She has no computer, no router, and no cell phone. She spends a lot of time gardening and we think she needs something like Life Alert®. If she fell out in her yard, it could be quite a while before anyone found out about it. Have any of you had experiences, either personal or as EMTs, cops, etc., with these systems that would be helpful? Thank you for posting this, Jim. I just brought my father home from the rehab hospital yesterday after a stroke he had three weeks ago. I want to look into this as well.

There was a thread not too long ago about this but can't remember the title.

Drill Here, Drill Now |
I know my Dad felt a lot better when his Mom (my grandmother) had a life alert. She fell several times in her late 80s and 90s (including a broken hip), and she received speedy medical attention or first aid every time. She lived in independent living and both locations used the system the place utilized (it rang to an attendant on-site). When I was a bachelor in SoCal, a family befriended me and invited me to all of their family holidays (I didn't go back to the Upper Midwest except Christmas). My friend's Dad who was retired decided to GTFO SoCal and move back to Iowa where all of his siblings and cousins lived. He bought a house and lived alone, and didn't listen to my friends about getting a life alert. He suffered a hard fall, cut his leg, and couldn't get up or call anyone. He laid there for 3 days before someone stopped by and found him semi-conscious. The cut was badly infected from 3 days of laying in his own urine and excrement. He was hospitalized for 2 weeks before he died. Sorry to be a downer, but it was pretty memorable for me as I spoke with his daughter every night on the phone during the 2 weeks he was dying in the hospital. Definitely easier ways on your family to pass away. Raised Hands Surround Us Three Nails To Protect Us |
Without a doubt saved my wife's grandmother's life on multiple occasions. I would call the local medics that would respond to her residence to see who they suggest. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Make sure the monitoring company knows where there is a key and has multiple numbers to reach family. Also get a list of medications, doctors information, and hospital preference post it and emergency numbers on the fridge or other visible place.
