I'm putting together a package for a 24'x40' open sided carport and one of the selections is roll insulation for a condensation barrier. I'm inclined to take it, as I have for the other 2 post frame bldgs I've had built. Cost is $656 material and there will be some addtl labor, figure $800 for add on. Roof is charcoal grey.

Yes it will never be easier or No waste of money in an open sided building? Smile

I've got an Amish crew to install the carport but I'm going to call it a pavilion when/if I get a permit. Right now city hall is shut down and I don't need a variance so I might get by w/out permit. My Amish crew says he can fit a small job in between house framing so I'm headed to Menards while their 11% rebate is on. Total package cost is about $7000 and labor estimate is $2500. I've got no view now and my neighbor is putting up a building so I'd as soon look at my carport as the other choices.

How would a roof condensate when the exterior and interior sides are the same temperature?

Hedley Lamarr: Wait, wait, wait. I'm unarmed.
Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists.
Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

what is the possiblity of enclosing the open sides at a later date? if so then you would be ahead of the insulation game.................. drill sgt.

If it is always going to be open sided then I would not insulate it, as it is just something to deteriorate.

Now if you plan to add walls a year or two down the road then insulate. Or you could foam it later if you decide to add the walls, but likely more money to foam.

Shaql, EXCELLENT point.

I put "Double Bubble" under a large metal gazebo roof and it made a HUGE difference in the heat radiating below the roof, so if you plan to loaf under it much and it is in the sun... it also made it quieter inside when raining. Neither may be a factor in your case so other wise, especially if on a budget, I would probably skip it.

The double bubble works EXCELLENT. I used Reflectix to line the trans tunnel and floor in my 66 Mustang which is a Florida car. I was AMAZED at how much cooler it felt after I installed it.

On an open sided carport, you are wasting your money and time by insulating the roof.

Frost forms on the underside of ours went humidity is higher in the spring, sun comes up, frost melts and drips, find some puddles on the boat cover.

An architect once said if you have no HVAC insulation serves no purpose. He was talking about a shed in the south where we rarely get below 30.
