Here's what I learned.
two doctors told me that I'd have been better off if I had broken said ankle.
It would have healed faster and felt better down the road.
then there is R.I.C.E.

R. stands for Rest, stay off it.

I. stands for Ice it.
90 minutes with ice packs 90 min. w/o.

if your ankle /foot gets froze , you can
put the ice behind the knee , for a while.

C. stands for compression, Ace bandage around the foot and ankle.
learn how to wrap it right. with the right tension.

E. stands for Elevate,

not off the floor , but at least at or above your heart.

The e.r. said two months for it to feel pretty normal,
the orthopedist
says more like three months at my age.

this was an ankle roll to the outside.

I had some 4 y.o. oxycodone that got me by for two days . but I hate that crap.

Sorry to hear! I tthink you got solid advice when they said you would have been better off breaking it. Had countless ankle sprains as a teen and into my early twenties. Dr's told me the same thing about healing. Now in my 50's my ankles are good and solid but have lots of clicks and noises when I move them around. Fingers crossed I have nothing worse down the road with them.

Excellent advice on recovery!

I did the same thing nearly 50 years ago. And the ER doc in Cherokee, NC told me that same thing. Glad I wasn't a horse, because they'd have shot me. Still have all kinds of problems that seem to localize right there. Even Gout has moved to the ankle from the big toe.

Doctors now need to see my feet. Makes me glad I'm not one. But they always balk at that ankle. Say it looks like its holding water and is a sign of heart trouble. I tell them to look at my right ankle and tell me why its normal/skinny. Its just that the left one has a grapefruit growing on it.

You can buy an elastic cuff that is better than an Ace bandage. And you don't have stupid clips to come off and get lost.

I fractured/broke my left ankle 6 weeks ago had a plate and screws put in. I had a minor infection at the incision the Dr wasn't interested in how much weight I could put on it today he was more concerned about the infection and cleaned out the wound today.

So far, I'm at about 26 months.

Tore ligament and tendon in my left ankle in July of 2017.
Went to the doctor in October when I got fed up from lack of sleep.

After months of physical therapy and cortisone shot, I finally had surgery last October.
Surgery consisted of cutting the ligament (ATFL), pulling it taut, and reattaching it. The peroneal tendons were also split longitudinally and displaced, with part of in front of the fibula, so he rebuilt that. Also removed 3 bone spurs while he was in there.
A couple months time spent in a splint, hard cast, then walking boot before therapy began again, and lasted until January of this year.

In April, at the 6-month post-surgery check with the podiatrist, I told him I had to go back to wearing a brace about mid work week or else I was hobbling by Friday again. He said I shouldn't require any kind of bracing at that point.
He ordered another MRI. Results came back, and were inconclusive as there's too much scar tissue and inflammation, so he puts me on an anti-inflammatory and orders more therapy.

The therapist is convinced there's still a tear in the peroneal tendons, as she noted a couple areas where it still hurts, right where the peroneal tendons hook up to the toes. My big toe doesn't really flex, and tends to go numb...other indicators.

I see the podiatrist on Wednesday of this week, and I expect we'll be discussing a 2nd surgery.

3M Vetwrap is a much better wrap than 3M's Ace bandage, and costs half as much. It adheres to itself, so no clips or velcro to come loose. You can vary the compression easily. It is not generally reusable, though. The wife buys it by the case for her dogs and herself. I have a few rolls on hand myself, in my truck's first aid kit and glove box, as well as at home. It is also good for securing a large gauze dressing.

July 27th I had been at work for 2.5 hours when I reached down to pull my sock up & my right ankle was swollen. Showed my boss & coworker as they were right there. I had no pain & had full range of motion, no evidence of why. No marks like a bite, I did not twist it, etc. I do my due diligence & iced it on my break, I took benadryl & ibuprofen. Elevated it. 4 days went by & still wasn't better so went to my doctor. I have a very high pain tolerance. Told me to keep doing what I was doing & wear compression when at work & during exercise. Told me I can exercise as long as it didn't hurt. Call them in a week. Week later, no change. 3 weeks go by, swelling slightly better but slight, intermittent pain gets worse. Finally my husband gets involved & they do blood work. It's slightly "off" so they approve an MRI.

I have a torn peroneal brevis tendon & multiple partial tears of my anterior talofibular ligament. No idea how this happened as I was babying a back issue & haven't been doing anything strenuous & no trauma to the area. Now I am waiting for my appointment with a podiatrist.

Over 30 years ago, I tore every ligament off the top of my foot so fast and hard that the ligaments ripped pieces of bone off the top of my foot (Think of tape being ripped off a wall with the paint). As we sit here today, I know whenever a storm is coming in. You have my sympathy.

Had my podiatrist appointment today.

He thinks the residual scar tissue is what’s causing the continued pain, so he did an ultrasound-guided cortisone injection to try to break up the scar tissue, and come back in 6 weeks.

I read my report on the screen, and their main findings from the original injury were:
Sprain of anterior talofibular ligament
Sprain of calcaneofibular ligament
Peroneal tendinosis/tenolysis
Exostosis of fibula
Exostosis of tibia

All this from rolling my ankle in my backyard while stepping over a rock.
Doesn’t take much.
