Walmart Employee Turns In Man

Not sure I see anything in his purchases that raises an eyebrow but sounds like this fella might have some mental health issues that would prevent him from legally possessing firearms.

There's nothing described in that brief news article. That doesn't mean that there wasn't anything that raised an eyebrow.

He very well could have done/said some things that caused the Wal-Mart employee to be concerned enough to notify the police, but the news media just doesn't know what it is yet.

It doesn't necessarily mean the Wal-Mart employee was just a snowflake who went all "OMG he's buying ammo so he must be a murderer!!!!1"

It's entirely possible that the crazy guy was acting... uh... crazy. Wink

Given recent events and lacking all the facts, I'm withholding judgement as to whether the Walmart employee was justified in being suspicious and calling the PD.

Not sure who's pic V-Tail posted, but below is the perp according to The Cornell Daily Sun.

I suspect it was statements he made to the clerk that got their attention.

Statements likely relating to owning this:

a firearm illegal under the SAFE Act (unless registered back in, IIRC, 2013?).

And if he owned one of those, he probably said something about owning these:

also illegal under the SAFE Act.

So feel free to shop at WallyWorld just key your trap shut.

Fireworks 'rigged' with shrapnel? I suppose that could be a destructive device. In our current culture I can see the concern. But as a mischievous youth, I made plenty of firework devices just for the entertainment value. Living in rural Colorado afforded me boredom time that birthed m80 'bombs' we used to fire for effect on the local rodentia as well as my best friend's mother's pressure cooker pot. Blew that lid 50 ft in the air lol. I'd like to see what these officers declare is a home made silencer. Could be a real home made silencer, but given what I read of this kid's apartment and unless he's a machinist, that device could be a pillow duct taped to a cylinder shape lying near his rifle. This whole thing sounds kind of hyped.

Not sure I want Walmart employees dropping a dime on purchases like he made.

Looks like that's a kid from Ohio who was suspended for refusing to leave his classroon during the gun protest earlier this week. From this news story: http://tribunist.com/news/stud...gun-control-walkout/

It's totally unrelated to this thread.

I’ll add that the story called it a MSR-15 which was released in 2017 and therefore could not have been registered prior to SAFE Act’s cut-off date

I grew up 15 miles from the People's Republik of Ithaca, so glad I left the state 30+ years ago.

Here's an article from the local paper, it may have more details but I can't open it as I've exceed my free reads.

Former Cornell student charged in weapons bust

A former Cornell student is accused of keeping a silencer and explosive in his apartment in Ithaca, while also participating in the fraudulent purchase of a firearm.

On March 7, members of the Ithaca Police Department followed up on a tip regarding suspicious activity involving the occupant of an apartment in the 100-block of Dryden Road in Ithaca.

Police investigators recovered a cache of items, according to a news release, including an unassembled AR-15 rifle, gas mask, homemade silencer, ammunition, pipes, high-capacity rifle magazines, medical trauma supplies, a bulletproof vest, food rations and fireworks.

Maximilien Reynolds, 19, of Ithaca, who resides at the apartment, was charged with possession of a destructive device and a silencer, as well as aiding and abetting the straw purchase of a rifle, referring to the criminal act in which a person who is prohibited from buying firearms uses another person to buy a gun on their behalf.

Reynolds appeared Friday in United States District Court in Syracuse, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. He is being held without bail, pending a hearing.

The charges against Reynolds each carry a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison, along with terms of supervised release and fines, according to the U. S. Attorney's Office.

"What started as a tip from a citizen at a local business about some suspicious behavior led to any alarming discovery," Ithaca Police Department Chief of Police Pete Tyler said in a statement. "This investigation is a successful example of 'see something, say something' with appropriate follow up action taken by local and federal law enforcement, all working together with a positive, proactive outcome."

On Friday, Cornell University Vice President for University Relations Joel M. Malina said law enforcement agencies indicated there is no threat to the Cornell campus or the Collegetown neighborhood, adding, "This is a good reminder that we can all help to keep our community safe by immediately reporting suspicious activity."

The school expected students would walk out or gather together to support gun rights. However, this student chose neither and wanted to stay out of it. However, his teacher deserves discipline as she left a student alone in the classroom. You don't leave students behind and you always lock the room.
