Game system for son--need help
My son is asking for an Xbox for his birthday. This is his first game system. He wants to play Madden football. I don't know the differences between an Xbox, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. Can anyone help me out?

My son will turn 9.

Not a gaming nerd/expert but, the 360 is on the way out. Definitely get him the Xbox one. Get a used one from Gamestop. See link to Xbox one X and S to see differences.

I agree with BigSwede go with at least an Xbox One, buying used might be a good option as well.

Get the Xbox one X if you've got or plan to get a 4k TV, otherwise the xbox one S is fine.

What other types of games does he like? Will you get him an XBOX Live subscription? Personally, I'd recommend it for that game. He'll also get a selection of free games each month. He'll be able to play them as long as he maintains his subscription.

I wouldn't risk a used system but the first generation XBOX One or XBOX One S should do nicely.

You need an X Box One. The others are hopelessly out of date. You probably can't a new one of those anyway.

X Box One X. Son has one, as well as PS4. Most friends play X, but, to me, graphics, ease, etc. are better in PlayStation. But what do I know. Regardless, he plays, I don't.

The Xbox One X is only if you have a 4K HDR TV or you wont see any difference.

The 360 is dead, you can still find some games for it, but there is nothing new coming, and hasn't been for a while now.

If you are going PlayStation, the PS4 Pro is the equal to the Xbox One X, only get that if you are hardcore into games and have a TV that can handle it.

Xbox One (or Xbox One S) is the way to go.

XBox One S works great with a 4K tv.

I like my PS4 best but the XBox Ones are great, too.

I'm not saying it won't, however the X is more powerful and can better take advantage of the 4k resolution.

The X Box 1, I think gives you the best bang for the buck. Like others have said, the 360 is no longer in production and will be a waste of money. XBOX live offers free games every month and has Microsoft support, which does a really good job in my opinion. Not a bad deal for $60.00 a year. Many 360 games are being formatted to the XBOX 1 now.

We have a PS4 and a Xbox One that my girls bought themselves. Some games are platform specific. My kids minecraft a lot on both but the PS4 probably seems the most used. A friend posted the same question on his FB wall and the vast majority thought the PS4 was a better system. I wouldn’t buy an older gen PS3 or Xbox personally. Trust me...we bought the PS3 thinking it would be ok...the OS was so slow and the system felt it’s age.

If I read correctly the XBox X is the only one with a true 4k bluray player.
The XBox S and PS4 Pro both upscale.

I got the Scorpio (XboxOneX) when it came out and bought a big 4k tv. I cannot go back to the older xbox ones.

As for sony vs microsoft, if he plans on playing with friends, see what systems they have. I have both but only do online with xbox. My sons and daughter are the same.

From someone you uses all the systems frequently:

XBOX One: First game system - no problem and you can get it used. Graphics look fine, speed is good

XBOX One X: Better graphics, faster speed, better DVD player(who actually uses one??), a lot more money

Make sure to factor in like someone else already mentioned, $60/year for XBOX Gold so he can play online with friends.

One S should be great for a 9 year old. The X has a bit more processing power but it is twice the price. Both have 4K disc players. The S will be white and the X will be black.

The One S may upscale games to 4k, but it is indeed a true 4K UHD bluray player. It also outputs DTS X and Dolby Atmos.
