I once got a call from someone I didn't know asking to purchase a car I had in the yard. I live in a rural area and my "yard" is 150 yards from the main road and can't be seen. You can't even see the top of my house from the main road. Turns out that the caller knew a UPS driver who had told him about a car he had seen and gave the guy the address and name. Total horseshit. I have the heart of a lion.......and a lifetime ban from the Toronto Zoo.- Unknown | |||

I had someone approach me about a car in my yard that was not listed for sale anywhere. He spent hours on Google earth. The eyes are everywhere. | |||

Unless you are in a very behind-the-times county, ownership records are readily available online. If someone knows an address, they can find the ownership. Likewise, if someone has your name, they can likely find your property. | |||

Unless you are a public safety official in a state that protects that information your address is easily obtainable. Not that you shouldn’t limit where you put it, but trivially easy for anyone who wants your address to get it. Yeah, really. It's super easy to get someone's name and address from the County Assessor. A few months back I got a call from a local guy wanting to know if I was interested in selling some land I own...I knew darn well how he got my information. .....never marry a woman who is mean to your waitress. | |||

Yep. Property records are public records. Always have been. The only difference now is that the vast majority are available online these days, whereas before they'd have to call/go to the county property tax office to get the info. | |||

And voter registration. In NC your address and a plethora of other info is publicly available if you are registered to vote. Almost no way to remove it. I’m diligent about keeping my information off the internet but that’s the one thing that can’t be fixed. Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Property records only go one way. You cannot have a name and look up their address through that system. Voter rolls, well that may be a problem. Having a fence, gate, plus a sign saying no trespassers/no solicitors helps. Opening the door with a gun at the ready will reduce comebacks. I had an evil person tracking me down through DMV records. He had been paying persons to find and kill me, got very close a few times. Wish I had the time and money to hire an attorney and go after the person who was giving up my address. -c1steve | |||

As a lender I have an account with several title companies that let me search by name, address even parcel. If you own property in your name I can find it. Some states are better than others but usually it’s pretty easy. And sometimes I see LLC’s or corporate entities in tax returns and I can search by those names and have found property. With a paid account at some of the public database companies ridiculous amounts to info is available | |||

In my state, I can enter your name on the property appraiser’s website and find your address. I can see how much you paid for your house, how you vote, and all criminal, civil, and traffic records. This info is wide open. | |||
