Staying in Norfolk for the night and here’s my view:

Look at that big beautiful ship!

What a grand old girl.

Nice.

I always thought it would be cool to 'ride out' a hurricane onboard one of those old battleships (USS North Carolina, Texas, or Alabama). . .

I know exactly where you are!
I was there a couple of years ago and went on the battleship after our meeting. It is a great experience!

As a young boy of 7-9 years old, went on the USS Alabama several times. Now, as an older man, went to the USS New Jersey as few times. Always in awe of the men who served and the design of mighty ships.
The intrepid in NYC is also very cool to visit.

Niiiiice! What a view. That’s one of my favorite spots in Norfolk.

In my family two generations served aboard her. You can get an incredible view of the area and BB64 if you go up the Suntrust (might have been renamed) building in front of the battleship.

I’ll never forget this day.

Interesting fantasy. There are reasons these ship avoid storms. Imagine being lashed to your bunk for hours on end while the vessel pitches and rolls.

I've never been on a battleship. Would like to some day but the Tucson Navy is pretty small - I think it consists of a Zodiac and a 2 person kayak.

Rode one out on a Spurance Class Destoryer once, best sleep I ever had.

My Dad was on the USS IOWA in the Pacific during WWII. They ran into a typhoon which damaged one of the shafts so they had to return to the USA to get it fixed. 3 destroyers were lost in that storm. My Dad said even a battleship ain't big enough for one of those storms.

Well, I meant while tied to the dock (though underway would be a LOT better). They can't exactly move those battleships when hurricanes and big storms come through. . .

The big ships don’t roll badly. If you want to be strapped down all night, ride one of the old LSTs in Force 10 or better.

Forgot to mention, those flat-bottomed LSTs don’t pitch. They judder.
