“A House Republican investigation into Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar has been launched after newly filed financial disclosures showed her family's reported wealth exploding to more than $30 million in a single year.

The House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, is examining how the 'Squad' lawmaker and her husband rapidly amassed millions - at a time that a $9 billion Somali social services fraud scandal also exploded in her state.

Investigators are openly weighing subpoenas as they probe whether politically connected businesses tied to Omar's family warrant deeper scrutiny, House Republicans said. 

The investigation follows federal prosecutors opening a broader investigation into alleged industrial-scale fraud involving billions of dollars in social service funds in Minnesota.

Republicans say that scandal alone makes Omar's apparent financial windfall impossible to ignore.

'We're going to get answers, whether it's through the Ethics Committee or the Oversight Committee, one of the two,' Comer said to the New York Post.

The scrutiny intensified after Omar's 2024 financial disclosure revealed her family's net worth ballooned, jumping from negligible assets to a valuation that could reach as high as $30 million in a single year, according to the ranges reported on the form. …”

I’d like to see a corruption tracker: who is under investigation, date placed under investigation, crimes being investigated, when the statute of limitations expires, date charges are filed, and results.

I’ve got a feeling that a lot of what is happening is fantastic news stories, yet very few convictions will ever come of it. I hope like hell I’m wrong, but a real time chart sure would be helpful to follow the DOJ’s progress. They did it with DOGE. I’m not sure if there were pie charts and graphs but the website kept up to date as I recall.

I guess that’s cool, but please forgive me if I don’t get too excited until a) there is a criminal referral to the DOJ and an indictment of Ilhan Oman, and b) this sort of enrichment investigation of all members of the legislature, on both sides of the aisle.

Yeah, I don’t think she belongs in this country, much less in congress, but going after her on corruption and nobody else leaves the door open to partisanship. If folks knew before they ran that enriching themselves at the public trough regardless of party was likely to land them in jail, we might have a better crop of legislators.

Unfortunately, the way she got rich is pretty common and likely perfectly legal, though it shouldn't be. Lots of politicians have family members who own "consulting" companies that get hired by the campaigns and charge crazy money. Maxine Waters's daughter is another. Lots of them have spouses or kids either on the campaign payroll or hire them as consultants and there are just about no rules for how much they can be paid.

Stealing the public's funds has been a hallmark of pretty much every politician since taxes and tributes were first imagined. Shouldn't politicians be required to transparently and timely reveal their finances down to the transaction level while they hold public office?

By the way how do they get an actual 700 million in cash? I get how the finances worked but how do you get that much actual cash.

As a former Armored Truck person that frequently picked up new cash for the BEP at O'hare Airport and drove it to the Fed. Reserve bank in Chicago, I doubt you could get that much cash in a Armored Truck let alone a suit case. The weight alone would be monumental.

It wasn’t in one suitcase. TSA workers reported seeing suitcases of cash headed out with Somalis on a nearly weekly basis.

Anybody here working on their tax filing material yet? Just reading this thread sends shudders up my spine. How damn much has been stolen, misappropriated, etc.

It was over an extended period of time that TSA logged the money and reported it. Perfectly legal as long as you claim it.

Estimates are that about $1 Trillion of our $1.8 trillion yearly deficit is fraud, waste, and abuse. Everyone has their finger in the honey pot.
