We used to see that all the time at triathlons in the early days, before trisuits, changing tents, etc. Gals, too.

I believe that is how one fellow, Big Al, got his name.

Is that kind of vascularity an indication of PED's or do most competitive cyclist look like that?

No, it's not an indication of PEDs.

A rider posted a similar pic last year, and people had the same reaction.

Another aspect, caloric intake. I could not physically eat enough to rep!ace what I burned. I lost 15 pounds in 6 days. That guy is skinny as a rail.

I would say neither actually. Having more red blood cells would certainly thicken one's blood, but that is not a clear benefit to a cyclist necessarily or a side effect of training. More importantly, it is an athlete's VO2 max that determines overall endurance and fitness.

My thought as well, my feet are always discolored by socks after a really long hike or road march. Especially with army issue green or black socks.

It is surprising how much you can eat when you work up an appetite.

Before I quit smoking to take up triathloning, I was so skinny the other lawyers teased me because my pin striped suits had only 5 stripes. I had a meager appetite.

It took a couple of years, but at one point, I was swimming 18,00 yards a week, riding 100 miles and running 25 miles or so, and eating 4,000-6,000 calories a day. I managed to put on 25 lbs or so. My body fat was 6-7% back then.

Neither can a professional cyclist. Oh they certainly eat like a whale, but they can never replace it all. After three weeks in the tour, their bodies are worn down and emaciated. It's why it's just so difficult for cyclists to do both the Giro and the Tour in the same year.

Very true.

I have a German friend that years ago used to run in those ultra-marathon races, 100 Km. Ran one in Switzerland. They ran at night, and he did the 100 klicks in 8 hours and 3 minutes. Said if he had known he was that close he could have beat the 8 hour mark.

Anyway, he went to the doctor for something or other. The doctor was a stand-in for the regular one. X-ray of his chest scared the crap out of the doctor, due to his very enlarged heart! Came from running all the time. He kept a log and met his goal of running around the world. At least in miles.

When I worked as a moto pilot at the pro races that Trump and DuPont sponsored, I got to know a couple of the elite riders on a first name basis. I could not believe their caloric intake during the race. One in particular told me he was at 2% body fat and his trainer had him ingesting 15,000 calories per day in order not to "bonk". Even at that his body fat decreased through the ten day length of the competition. Almost a total carbohydrate diet on race days. Not saying that was healthy but it seemed to keep them going. The debris that was on the road after a feeding station during the race was treacherous due to the sheer number of banana peels on the pavement.

Ok, that's just utter nonsense. No cyclist is consuming 15,000 calories in one day. And that rider would likely be almost dead if he were really at only 2% body fat. That dude was full of it.

Why would you suggest that's not healthy? Endurance athletes primarily need carbohydrates. That's where they get their energy from. This is ridiculous this perception nowadays that eating carbohydrates is bad for you or makes you fat. Freakin' Atkins. Roll Eyes

You can believe that. The pools at most Ys are kept at near bath water temp, in the 80's, way too hot for serious lap swimming. The pools are used for old lady water dancing usually, and if it is cold, the non serious lap swimmers complain.

Serious swimming burns a lot of energy. I was comfortable in 65 degree water, less so in water above 72 or so, and below about 63 degrees.
