It takes big arteries and veins and lots of them to carry enough oxygenated blood to all those muscle cells for energy to keep those muscles going.

This is what "getting in shape" actually means. Building up your circulatory system to handle the energy demands.

In 1996, I rode BRAN (Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska, 500+ miles in six days). When I got home, my wife's first comment was about my legs.

Of course, they didn't look exactly like that, but the underwent something of a change.

I saw the TdF in 2005 and saw Jan Ulrich, the Germany. He was pretty trim up top and his waist pretty small, but his quads and calves were huge - and sunburnt. Three weeks of 100+ miles per day (minus time trials) will give you quite a workout. Not to mention the thousands of training miles. Yikes

I went to a fairly high caliber bike race but not pros that had RVs. After the race one of the riders changed his clothes while standing behind his car. Didn't give a crap about having nothing on for a few seconds. His butt look like something alien. No fat at all just striated muscles.

Actually, no. They aren't kept that tight at all. They're no tighter than your average running shoe would be in any case. His feet are just super pale and in the sun light of the tinted bus window.

And no, that is not an indication of doping. It's really not that unusual.
