Anyone know of an online source that sells nicely made, yet functional handheld magnifying glass? Looking for one of the big old style ones with a metal frame and either a metal, wood, or bone handle.

I see like 5,000 of them on amazon. And most of the same ones elsewhere. Is there some magic needed to assess choices? “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

Years back I purchased a high quality magnifier, Made in Germany, off Ebay. There must be a million different styles for sale there.

Its a gift so I'd like one that's aesthetic as well as functional. Looking for one of the big hefty ones you find in antique shops. Cause you know I can't go to antique shops right now... I guess I'll search through eBay, but there's just such crap on there. Was hoping there was a place like countycomm or similar that would have something like that.

Well, since you are in Ypsi, call Stadium Opticians in Ann Arbor. They might have something that might suitable for you. I got my magnifying glass from Dobbs Opticians, a German made product, when they were still in business. If you think you can, YOU WILL!!!!!

If it was for you, I'd suggest you buy 2. One for each place you need one. Mine is never by my recliner. I've found the curved surface of a hand sanitizer jar will work in a pinch. OK, I need a 3rd one. Unhappy ammo seeker

Or, he needs to light his pipe. I took this photo at a reenactment. I should have asked what he did on cloudy days! Collecting dust.

Here is the place you need. https://www.magnifier.com/large-magnifier.htm If I had that 10" lens when I was a kid, nothing would have been safe. You can damn near weld with that thing. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

The large plastic Fresnel lenses are best for that. I actually melted the lead out of a bullet using one. On a sunny day, paper will ignite with an audible pop. But this is what the OP is requesting, “I'd like one that's aesthetic as well as functional,” so that probably wouldn’t do. ► 6.4/93.6 “Most men … can seldom accept the simplest and most obvious truth if it … would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions … which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives.” — Leo Tolstoy
