My 19 year old daughter enlisted in the National Guard (ROTC) today. She goes to Ft. Jackson this summer for basic training. My daughter is really excited, but my wife and I are nervous. Very nervous, actually.

Congratulations to all of you.

And please thank her for volunteering. That is a testament to her character.

Congrats to you both! Going to my daughter's graduation from basic was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

How does the ROTC work?

Is she scheduled to go to college after basic training?

Going to basic I assume she joined as enlisted and not as an officer.

I'd be nervous too if it was my daughter. Bet that's any normal parent's reaction. Given time, you'll get used to the idea. She'll be fine.

Fort Jackson - summer basic training, uhm...she's gonna know she's not in Utah anymore...

Yep, they go to school during the school year and then do cadet stuff over the summers. They can also get slots for Airborne school. I think their cumulative exercise is still at Joint Base Lewis McChord and it's called LDAC.

I know during OCS, we were enlisted. I assume a cadet is the same.

Personally I think ROTC is the most balanced commissioning source out of USMA, ROTC and OCS. Most USMA graduates I've met are just weirdos. OCS are older, sometimes prior enlisted guys/gals and bitter. Out of all the officers I've met, I think ROTC grads are the most balanced.

Congrats, I did the ROTC route after 3 enlisted. Make sure she knows to take any schools she can get in the summer. They are much harder to get slots for after she’s commissioned.

I'm sure she will do fine. Thank her (and you) for her decision to serve.

I was AFROTC (4 years back in 1955-60) and it was a good decision for me.

I was very proud when ours enlisted. Then I sat down and remembered what I went thru.

I prayed a lot. A lot.

It worked.
