I know a teacher who works at the higher elementary school level in a small rural/suburban district. This teacher has a science focus in the class assignments. The teacher did a very basic experiment, that has been repeated every year for nearly 2 decades where dry ice is dropped in a glass of water, students observe the reaction, and they discuss results.

Almost immediately a student started complaining of Carbon Dioxide poisoning, the student was sent to the office. At the end of the day a second student, and close friend of the first, had his mother come get him also complaining about Carbon Dioxide poisoning.

The school administration asked the teacher to think more carefully about the choices made with experiments made with the class so as not to harm the children.

As a response the teacher sent an email to all parents in the class explaining the experiment and that there was no risk of CO2 poisoning. Further more any planned experiment will be sent to the parents ahead of time and if a majority of parents are concerned, it will not be performed live in class. 80% of parents responded that it was nonsense that this had to be done and they supported the class content one even noted that it would have taken a ton of dry ice and the room full of water to produce enough CO2 to cause an issue. Of course the children would have drowned far quicker than to have died by this deadly gas.

The teacher was then notified by school administration that this email blast would potentially single out the effected students and could cause them anxiety. Therefore any future email sent by the teacher to parents must first be forwarded to the administration for review and approval.


There is another teacher in the same building that is very popular with kids. This teacher is highly requested. This teacher does not tolerate attitude from students. When students get unruly, the teacher is often called on by other staff because one commanding word like "HEY" or "STOP" brings the students right back in line and all shenanigans cease immediately.

This teacher was recently told that this was inappropriate in a school as it causes anxiety to students that are sensitive. You must speak to students in hushed tones and calm voice. If the teacher his heard speaking loudly again, it will be reflected negatively in the next review.

The teacher I was speaking with said it is not uncommon for kids to run screaming up and down the halls with teachers quietly saying "please stop, slow down, running is not appropriate inside, please make a better decision" and being totally ignored.

Other examples were cited where kids were in clear violation of the law, and yet not even given detention or suspensions for fear of causing anxiety in the students accused.

I can't believe based on the teachers that I know that this is isolated to one school. This is what is going on out there? It's no wonder kids are killing each other at an alarming rate.

The other day I was picking up my son from school; another class was returning from somewhere and a few of them were starting to get loud and beginning to run. The male teacher yelled "Quiet, and no running!!". the students immediately ceased and fell back in line with the others.

It was good to see that insanity is not the universal rule.

Somewhere, at a school hopefully near me, the adults are in charge.

It's not isolated.
It's the snow flake culture.

The solution is individual responsibility. It means putting parents back in charge of raising their children. The most important responsibility a parent has is the education of their children.... which most have abrogated to the State.

The cultural answer is the end of "public" education. Education is too important to turn over to government. Since that won't happen anytime soon, the answer for each parent is to find the best possible solution for the child. For my wife and me, this meant parochial schools. It's a big sacrifice to have to pay twice. You still pay all of the school taxes (property taxes, and sales taxes) and you don't get a deduction for what you pay in tuition. School choice, in the form of tax credits or vouchers would be a start.

About once a week, our science teacher would carve off a piece of sodium from a goodly sized chunk and put it in a large tub of water. Occasionally, when the piece was a little too large, we would get to see some pretty impressive detonations.

Its not all hopeless... the principal in my sons school is former military and she tolerates zero bullshit from the kids.

So its not all the boats, but yes the fleet is definitely headed in the wrong direction and many are in danger of sinking.

I’ve thought for some time that this may be our only hope. On the other hand, the military isn’t what it used to be. I’m sure they would rise to the challenge but it would take some time. Would be interesting to watch.
