How would they know? Follow up should be done, but it sounds suspicious to me.

Don’t contact their customer service. It’s a scam.
Download malwarebytes and run the free scan.

Again, do not contact any number that says “you’re infected, call us”!

Would depend on what the web sight is. I would lay odds though that it is a scam.

If you contact "customer service" be very wary. Take any information or suggestions from them, but don't provide them with any of your information.

Could use a lot more information on what the web address is, what browser, does it show a secure connection, etc.

https://www.pcrisk.com/removal...ve-a-zeus-virus-scam:

"You have a ZEUS virus" is a fake error message displayed by a rogue website. It is very similar to Hacking Alert, Cyber Security Warning, Hard Disk Failure, and a number of other fake error messages. Users are redirected to this site by a number of potentially unwanted adware-type programs (PUPs). These programs infiltrate the system during installation of regular apps. Following infiltration, adware-type apps deliver intrusive online advertisements, monitor users' web browsing activity and, in this case, cause unwanted browser redirects.

This fake pop-up error states that the system is infected with ZEUS malware and that closing the website will result in deletion of the hard drive. To prevent this situation and remove the malware, victims must contact a certified technician via a toll-free telephone number provided (+1-884-859-0337). Victims will then supposedly receive help in solving the issue. This error is a fraud. The infection does not exist - cyber criminals (developers of the rogue site) attempt to trick victims into calling and paying for services that are not needed. As well as causing unwanted redirects, adware displays intrusive online advertisements (for example, banners, pop-ups, coupons, etc.). To do this, it uses a 'virtual layer' - a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed advertisements often conceal underlying content of visited websites, thereby significantly diminishing the web browsing experience. Furthermore, these ads might lead to malicious websites - clicking them can result in high-risk computer infections. Adware also records geo-locations, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, Internet service providers (ISP), and a number of other similar data types that might contain private details. The data is shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who commonly misuse private details to generate revenue. This situation might cause serious privacy issues. You are strongly advised to uninstall adware-type applications immediately.

Anytime you get a message on a website or popup about a virus close that window and site.

If you think you have a problem run Malwarebytes or something similar. Make sure you get it from a website you type into your browser. Never ever download it from a popup or site that says your infected.

I have no idea how to deal with this sort of problem on an iPad.

Apple support might be able to help you with this. You can get there via the apple.com website. You should see a banner across the page, near the top, with various choices. "Support" is on the right side. Click on it and follow the prompts. I have done this in the past to open a chat session with an Apple support person. These people know their product and if you do "stump the chump" they will escalate the problem to a specialist. No charge for this, the service is buried in the $$$ that Apple gets when you buy their products.

My MIL called a web pop-up linked to a virus-alert email ...

Once they had her on the phone she paid $650 deducted from her checking account. They signed her up for a legitimate service @ $150/six months. Their "consultation fee" was almost $500 but the web security service was real enough, although geared to someone with far higher security requirements.

I was able to claw back $500 after complaining of their sales tactics and noting the AG would take a dim view of their business model.

The manager who handled the complaint seemed frazzled by running a dozen scam-bots, placating people handing over financial info, and dealing with irate relatives clambering for refunds.

On an Ipad, go to Settings and then to whatever browser you're using. I use Safari. When you tap Safari and scroll down the menu that appears you'll see "Clear History and Website Data" that will close any frozen windows that are open and you'll be back in business.
