My old laptop finally died. So I have a new Dell inbound. Windows 10 is the OS. My question is:
Is the preloaded anti virus ( Windows Defender) enough to protect it? I have an Avast subscription but it loads so much stuff on the system I don't want to install.
Computer folks, what say you?

My computer guy says it is excellent, but suggested I add Malwarebytes. I have a new laptop and Microsoft is constantly annoying me with their Edge browser. I had to go to task manager to turn it off and use what I wanted. See what the rest of the guys say.

Seriously, Win 10 is very good for every day use.

Malwarebytes is good to have loaded up in case you think you got something nasty.

For everyday stuff and not clicking on weird emails from Nigeria Win10 and your e-mail security should be good.

Yes, Windows Security is very good. I wouldn't install Avast.

I used Webroot on both my PC and my MacBook for the last 5 years. No problems yet.

I got a new laptop last fall and use the Windows Defender as well as Malwarebytes on the advice of my buddy IT guy.

Seems to work quite well, I'm happy with it.

Malwarebytes sounds good. I have used it in the past. Is the free version good to go? Or do I need the $40 Premium version? The Edge Browser does seem to suck. I am not huge Chrome fan either. What other Browsers are good?

Firefox is a lot better than Edge, if you don’t care for chrome.

I opted for the Comodo Internet Security Premium (free) suite and couple it with Malwarebytes and Malwarebyte's AdwCleaner. You do have to ensure proper Windows Defender settings so it won't interfere with Comodo's firewall or AV.

Malwarebytes is good but uses lots of computer resources. It has tendrils everywhere.

Takes Revo Uninstaller to pull it out by the roots, when your tired 5 year old desktop slows down.

MalwareBytes, the free version, is the only antivirus I use on my Mac laptop, and I’ve never suffered an infection. Here’s my once a day procedure:

* Disconnect from the Internet.
* Run a MalwareBytes scan (about ten seconds).
* After I get a “you’re clean “ report (I always do)…
* I backup my Mac. That way I know that all of my backups are clean.

As long as you stay off bad/suspect websites, do not open emails from people you do not know, and do not open suspicious attachments, you don't need one. I haven't used anti virus in a decade and rarely have an issue.

Check your internet service provider's website too. Some of them provide additional antivirus software at no additional charge. Xfinity, for example, includes Symantec for up to ~6 computers/devices.

I occasionally go to pornhub, so I use Norton360 for my anti-virus in addition to Windows Defender. Works for me.

This has been my experience as well. I'm just careful which links to open or not in my email. Defender upgrades often so Microsoft is staying on top of it apparently.
