400mI have a question about the NICS system
When an FFL uses the NICS system for a potential customer, does he give information as to what type of firearm the buyer wants to purchase? For instance a .380 Ruger or a .300 Weatherby magnum. Or is it a simple Yes/No for the transaction?

BeanheadI have overhead my dealer calling it in. They just ask if it is long gun or handgun. Sometimes he replies firearm..for a complete lower.
No caliber is asked. Also, once you are approved, you can buy more. I’ve done that…see something sense I want.

Dreamerx4In Virginia, we only input quantity of Pistol, Revolver, Rifle/Shotgun, Other.
The only time more information relating to the specific firearm is given, ie Make Model, serial, etc. Is when you are buying more than 1 handgun in a 5 day period.
Otherwise, the only place that has your specific firearm information relating to you, is on the Federal form 4473.
As of this time, FFL's are required to maintain the copy for 20 years. If they go out of business before 20 years, they have to send all 4473s to the ATF in Martinsburg, WV.
